I've heard too many people say that Michael Anthony has no say in what VH does. I have a hard time believing this, and I think it's insulting to Mike.

My impression is that Mike is a respected and valued member of VH -- not just that guy who plays bass. Why wouldn't his views on lead singer be taken into account? If anyone has proof that Mike is essentially discounted by the brothers and is only along for the ride, post it.

Some of that comes from Sammy's unpublished book. He claims Mike is treated as just a session player and is paid a salary only.

As always with VH, who knows if it is true.

Two things immediately spring to mind, both of which are a part of the Inside interview that's in the Links Interview section.

    1. Mikey says that he didn't even know that Dave was coming to work with them in 96. He says he called the studio, and Eddie handed the phone to Dave to say hi to Mikey. If Mikey had any clout, why wasn't he consulted about the possible return of Dave? And Mikey said something once to the effect of, "I didn't want Dave to return, but Eddie and Alex are my brothers so I agreed to it".

    2. Mikey says in that interview that it was the band that chose to remove his bass solo from the set list of the III tour. And Mikey admits that he was bothered by the decision. Again, if Mikey had any clout, why didn't he do the bass solo if that's what he wanted to do?

I like the guy, he's the common man of the band that's the easiest to relate to, but I don't believe he's got much say in the band.

These are examples of a two-against-one outcome. Couldn't the same have occurred with Alex the loser? Or even Ed? Just because we don't hear about the times when Mike and Alex or Mike and Ed may have been on the "winning" side (maybe because Ed and Alex and less vocal than Mike) does not mean that it hasn't happened. Maybe I'm just ill-informed, but it's a thought.

"I didn't want Dave to return, but Eddie and Alex are my brothers so I agreed to it".

Meaning: Eddie and Alex pull all the strings so what choice did I have.

Ed and Al call the shots. Mike is smart and does what he is told.

I'm beginning to wonder why Mikey is still with them. Just a salary and treated only as a session player? I'd say he should have more. His vocals are just as important to the band's sound as Ed's guitar. That alone should let Mikey call a few shots.

I agree Kenyon. Mike's a very important part of Van Halen. I'm also wondering why he hasn't left the band because of the way he has been treated.

I guess he could still be in "Snake"
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

Thank goodness that the fans appreciate Mike, because no one in Van Halen seems to.
