Forgive my ignorance, but exactly what did Dave do in those shows?

Played "Just A Gigolo" and "That's Life", poured some wine, complimented the old timers hair, gave a carnation to the pretty lady with a walker and false teeth at table #1, announced the time for bingo and then finished up with "Viva Las Vegas."

    It was good,

I never saw it in Vegas, but I did at Foxwoods casino in CT (The biggest casino in the world) and he had a big band, including Edgar Winter, There was a bit of cheese, but it was a real good show.

wondering what to expect at the casino in Verona NY where I just purchased 2 tix to see him for $185.25.

If its roth it'll be good.

saw his show in CT too (twice) - even shook Dave's hand the second night....- the show itself was very entertaining- but it was NOT geared towards the headbanging "metal only" kinda' VH fan-

you kinda' had to have an appreciation for different styles of music to enjoy it... big band, jazz, latin, blues, motown... but with some good rock mixed in too- edgar winter rocked...

i wouldn't expect most of the people who post on this site to appreciate it... too easy to write it off as CHEESE!!!! (yeah fuck dave- it sucked- it wasn't heavy metal- it was cheesy! heavy metal is the only kinda' music! yeah!!!!)

you didn't miss anything- don't worry about it...

    lol!

But it doesn't sound to bad. I guess it's just not the sort of thing his audience would appreciate.

Sounds like a good show though....

You know, if DLR wants to do a "lounge act" or a different type of show, more power to him. Maybe he should change his name a bit to fit the different show.

I know, I know... But seriously. He should bill him self as David Roth for his "lounge act" and/or David Lee Roth for the VH style show. Just to kinda let people know what they are going to be getting.

Let's put it this way. I know I'd be pissed if I paid $150 bucks for a show and what I got was Dave jacking off with a bottle of whiskey, soaking his audience in more ways than one.

i think it was billed as "david lee roth and the MAMBO SLAMMERS" how could you confuse that for a metal band?

    tickets were not $150 either...

I have a tape of one of the shows. The sound is awful in the sense that you just have to CRANK the volume just to hear what's going on. There's some really embarressing stuff where Dave is being basically heckled and he tells the people to go up the street where "they comp the faggots" and stuff like that. And this isn't done with flair (not that language like that is normally delivered with flair!!), Dave sounds lost and confused.

I should really pop it in and listen to it again sometime. I'm sure it wasn't bad musically, but the whole vibe of the above just left me trying to find the furthest corner of my tape collection, the one with the most dust.

Personally, I commend Dave for doing what he really enjoys, even if it's show tunes

I agree, but where was the commitment to it? It fails to explode immediately, and Dave abandons it like the Titanic! How do you build an audience when even you don't seem convinced enough to stick with something.

Couldn't Dave have toured this type of show all over North America?

I operated a small tour company for a while and one of the most frequented motorcoach destinations was Branson Mo. A lot of acts have set up camp there and do usually two shows daily. Johnny Cash, Mel Tillis, Mickey Gilley, The Osmonds,Yakov Smirnoff and a host of others all in the comfort of their personal cozy little theatres. I could dig seeing Dave doing this. Also I personally beleive that most bands and groups that we listen to were influenced by vastly different types of musicians and entertainers. I believe that Dave wanted to share those type of influences with his fanbase and it just didn't jell. Hats off for trying though.

I give him credit for getting out there, being himself no matter what, trying different things and having a good time, which is more than we can say for Van Halen at this point.
    Could this be magic?
