I thought it was very cool of him to reply....

No. Gary is still on good terms w/them, but, there is no talk of a VH3
    reunion.

WE have heard time and time agian that Ed became angry when Sammy wanted to express himself in ways that maybe Ed didn't care for. Could it be that Gary, already an established preformer before VH, possibly wanted to show some of his earlier work while on the road with VH? Or maybe Ed didn't want to listen to Gary's opinion on a follow-up record to VH3? Maybe the basic "I'm in Van Halen and I'll do whatever Ed wants" attitude wore off when it came time to go back to the studio.

I remember reading an interview with Gary from around when VH3 came out and Gary said when Eddie asked him what Extreme song(s) he wanted to perform live,Gary told him he didn't want to do any Extreme songs

I got the impression that the band was shocked about the lack of sales for VH3 and that kind of put the whole mojo on future recording sessions between Ed and Gary. Gary had stated time and again that he was a big classic VH fan, so I wouldn't be surprised if he just figured that it wasn't the right fit and Ed would be better going back to Dave or Sammy.

There are extremely few bands that can continue with success after losing the original lead singer. Van Halen was lucky, but I don't think it's possible to force a third or even a fourth sound on people.

Whether the band wants to admit it or not, successful bands do have a sound. I don't want to call it a formula because that implies that there's no creativity or innovation applied to new songs, but U2 always sounds like U2, even when they did the Pop Tour.

The problem with VH3 wasn't so much Gary as it was the totally different sound of Van Halen. I can only guess that Edward wanted to pursue that sound and Gary realized that it wasn't going to work.
    Could this be magic?

I think z28girl is on the right track. Maybe Ed wabted to continue in the III direction and Gary wasn't interesting in doing something that wasn't going to sell.

I dunno..in recent interviews Gary expresses how TOJ has allowed him to use his voice in different ways...something he wasn't able to do in VH. I think WB and the like were pressuring VH to make a hit record and all four of them just saw the writing on the wall.

    Pogmothon,
Eddie had a problem with Sammy expressing himself in the same old tired cliche's that he'd been doing for years....with Amsterdam and the drugs to Spanked and the sex. I think Eddie was just searching for a different and perhaps more mature songwriter. Nothing wrong with that.

From reading some other posts over the years, I thought Ed was going back to the classic VH sound but Gary didn't want to do that. Anybody heard of this besides me?

May as well throw in what I heard, and that was that Eddie would still have Gary in the band today if it was up to him, and was actually pissed that Gary left and miffed that VH3 stiffed so badly.

Gary saw what was the best thing to do and credit to him for that.
