This is old news but it is in Rolling Stone again. It is talking about the recording of the new Nirvana song...

"At a dinner break at a local pizza parlor, Cobain told road stories, including how one night a drunk Eddie Van Halen had ventured backstage at a Nirvana show and begged to jam. The tale brought on a laughing fit from Cobain. "It was funnier than hell," says studio owner Robert Lang."

You know, that was supposed to have been captured somewhat on a live video that was commercially available from nirvana. I have it, but I'll be damned if I remember seeing ed in there anywhere.

I remember hearing about this, but I never heard bout it being on tape. EVH goes backstage cuz he thought Nirvana was cool and wanted to jam a tune. VH was one of the few big hard rock bands that never felt the grunge backlash. VH was releasing no. 1 multi-platinum albums and packing in arenas right in the middle of grunge! I remember they even took Alice in Chains as an opening act on tour with them around 1993. And Alice was more than happy to go.
Anyhow, EVH wants to jam. The guys in Nirvana have no problem with it. Especially Dave Grohl and Pat Smear, 2 big VH fans. Pat has even named EVH as his favorite player! But EVH is way drunk(and on God knows what else) and made a nasty joke at Pat's expense. It was just a joke and EVH meant nothing by it, even apologizing later. But of all the guys there I heard Kurt was very uncomfortable. Then again, ole happy Kurt was like that with everyone. So it never came to be.
Fuckin Kurt shoulda lightened up a bit. Poor miserable bastard.

Ed would have taught those guys a big lesson on how to play rock and roll. It would have been interesting to hear it to say the least.

As I remember it, they didn't want Eddie to play so they told him they didn't have any spare guitars. At which point Eddie said "what about that mexican over there", pointing at Pat Smear.

The Mexican should have given him a guitar..

But could You imagine what that crap would have sounded like.........I don't think Eddie has played out of tune since 1977.......And the neck on the guitar had broken!

Nirvana was either out of tune or out of Key ALL THE TIME.......

Yea, Ed said somethin about "the mexican" or something joking about pat smear! lol... He meant it as a joke but I guess it stung him hard or sutmhin. Anyways, the band was ok with Ed, especially Pat and Dave. But Kurt poor bastard wanted no part of it. If he wasnt busy fighting with Axl Rose and spitting loogies on Axl's piano keys he was denying the great EVH a chance to jam. I love the way they make it out to be like Eddie was "begging" Kurt. It was more like cajoling, like "Come on Kurt man, this is hard rock man, let's do it" and stuff like that from what I have heard over the years. But Kurt is one of the only miserable humans who would turn away a shot to jam with the King! Eddie is a jam hound who has jammed with all from Santana and Leslie West to Frank Zappa, Steve Vai and Jerry Cantrell. Ole' Kurt wasnt that type of musician...

I was at the Nirvana gig that Ed was at...it was at the Forum in L.A. December of '93...I remember leavin' the place afterward and someone saying that they saw Ed drunk in the Forum Club after the gig...I kinda doubted it at the time being EVH at a Nirvana gig...but later on another friend of mine who was good friends with Dale Grover of the Melvins, who used to be the drummer for Nirvana at one time and was still friends with Kurt, said something about Ed being at the gig in L.A. and freakin' out Kurt...

Kurt didn't wanna jam with him because he probably couldnt. Kurt had no real musical talent, and would have no idea how to handle jamming with Ed, and Kurt knew it, so he said no.

I read about it in the now defunct Bam magazine. What I read was that EVH approached Pat Smear and asked "What are you, one of those Rajis or something?" I don't recall anything about a "Mexican".

Eddie freaked Kurt out? LOL!!! Kurt- a heroin junkie who was at the same time married to COURTNEY LOVE! Oh, but EVH freaked him out! Too funny...

What is even funnier is that most of that grunge scene was cool with VH. Pearl Jam digs VH and have even played 'Running With the Devil' in concert! Alice in Chains digs VH a lot and opened for VH on their 93' tour. And Jerry Cantrell could never stop talking about how much of an influence VH was on him and how he loves Eddie and how cool VH was to them on tour. Eddie hugn with AIC a lot and gave Jerry a couple of his own guitars and amps!! Kim Thayill of Soundgarden admits to really developing a respect and admiration for VH. The only jackass who didnt get it was Kurt. And even his bandmates like VH!!
