Look at my user icon,

anyone else wish HE were around?

I thought that VH3 was mysterious at best, but at least with him, Van Halen had stability and would perform the "classic" shit and it sounded quite good.

If we get a 4th voice, it won't match Gary's. He only needed some help with his stage presence, you don't grab your crotch when you are singing for Van Halen.

But I'd give him another try if thats what it took.

But they didn't have stability with Gary, eddymon. They had a tour that wasn't well received, an album that didn't move, and no luck in finishing a second album. They had stability with Dave and Sam.

I think you know what I mean.

Stability would have come at some point, they just needed the right producer this time.

Someone like Andy Johns would have done a great job in blending Gary's voice with the music, to make him sound like Gary Cherone, Not Gary Hagar.

Dave is the only way to slap Eddie's silly ass into musical shape. Gary would just want to slap his ass.

Just as a side arguement, when has great rock and roll ever come out of a "stable environment"?

Rock and roll thrives on instability, which is why most groups don't last all that long.

Exactly. Dave and Ed have both said many times that the tension between the two of them fueled Van Halen.

Honestly, a second album with Gary could have had great potential IF they let Gary sing like Gary CAN sing. I think the main reason that VH III was not as successful, was that fact that Gary did NOT sound like Gary.

The Mistake - When they recorded that album, either Gary thought that the best way to fit into the band was to try to sound like Sammy, or the VH brothers TOLD him to sing like that. Either way, it was a BAD decision. I was a fan of Gary's from the Extreme days, and when I heard that he was in VH, I thought it would GREAT! However, when they released the album and I first heard Gary singing like Sammy, I thought to myself in that moment "Oh no, they blew it"! Turned out to be more embarassing than I originally thought. Bad decision.

Toss in that Ed didn't sound like Ed, and Mike may not have even been Mike, and you may be on to something there.

The main reason was that most people couldn't care less about a VH album without Sammy and especially without Dave after MTV 1996.

The fact that most of us who actually heard it rated it somewhere from crap to mediocre didn't help either.

Well, people might want to change that attitude or it's quite possible we'll never see another VH album, regardless of who might sing on it.

An album isn't automatically good just because it says Van Halen on the cover. Call me a non true fan if you must but I really doubt I'd be interested if VH releases an album without Dave at this point. Actually I'm starting to wonder whether an album with Dave wouldn't be such a good idea either.

VH III is evidence of that. They had a great chance with a new singer and just plain blew it in my mind. I think that VH III would have also had a better chance if, like Rick S said, went back and got back to a rougher edged, attitude in your face sound like the early days. Sure it's great to push your music in new, fresh directions, but you can't turn your back on your roots. They (VH) probably realize this now, and I think Mikey was even quoted as saying that this was their current direction, whenever they get there, that is.
