I think its his fills. He just doesn't do simple cord changes. He adds cool fills between that always fit and completely change the dynamics of the song. The fill that comes after the first "Shine on, Shine on" during the chorus of "Humans Being" comes to mind and the fill just before the chorus in "Panama" as well.
He raised the bar in many aspects of rock guitar.

What is understood doesn't need to be discussed now doesn't it?

Eddie Van Halen = Unmatched guitarist in history.....
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

In all honesty...I think it's his rhythm playing. It's always bugged me that alot of people (including many guitar snobs) think of Ed as just being a gun slinger who can rattle off a million notes per second. In my opinion, he is also one the great rhythm guitar players too. IMO, he's right up there with Chuck Berry, Keith Richards and the rest. In fact, what prompted me to pick up the guitar and attempt to play was Ed's rhythm parts. His rhythm playing on Panama, Beautiful Girls and Oh! Pretty Woman is DA BOMB!

The guy has the ability to make a song STICK. I started listening in 1984 when I was 10 years old, and he's plagued me for life. My wife hates the fact that I don't listen to a song for lyrics, and that's Eddie's fault! I listen to the riffs, the rhythms and the solos (no solos nowadays, that's so sad). Oh, he's the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place, another reason my wife hates VH!
The guy is THE best, all around musician our generation has ever seen. 'Nuff said.

Amazing tremolo picking for one.
He holds the pick between his middle finger and forefinger and just motors.

My favorite is his use of natural harmonics.
Well that liquor in the night-time leaves strange memories. Seems a lifetime, since yesterday...

Eddie has the uncanny ability to play any type of music he wants and everyone seems to consume it and like it all the while Eddie is smiling while he is playing what he dreamed up. That is innovative and amazing!
Just go for it!
