I have a question concerning David Lee Roth's 1988 and 1991 tours. I've read that the Skyscraper tour flopped. Was this because of low attendance, or was it because the ticket sales could not break even with the money spent on the boxing ring and giant surf board etc. Also, on the A Little Ain't Enough tour, did DLR play arenas in the States, and how did the shows do overall? Thanks.

the Skyscraper tour sold out here in So-Cal, however the ALAE tour canceled the day of the show because of low ticket sales, and it was even a co-bill with Cinderella, the Skyscraper tour had POISON as the opener and did good biz

Skyscraper was a sellout in New York. I used to love when Dave would disappear from the stage and then reappear in the middle of the stadium to do a few songs. The surfboard across the stadium or the boxing ring. The giant microphone.

Interestingly, now Roth performs more like he did in the 70's than he did in the 80's and early 90's.

I saw Dave twice on both tours. In 88 it was the Meadowlands in April and the Garden in July. Both shows were packed but I remember reading that the Garden show was almost pulled. Why I don't know. I saw him on consecutive nights on ALAE in CT and Jones Beach. Both being outdoor shows and once again both packed. I don't know how the tour fared elsewhere but it couldn't have been too good. I think those two were his best solo efforts.

my memories of these tours are pretty much the same as everyone else. i saw the shows in NYC area and they were all packed. i do remember, thru my dave fan club info i was sent, the ALAE tour was supposed to start in march of 1991 as an arena tour (like he'd done with EEAS and SKY...) but it was pulled. then dave came back in a summer tour with Cinderella and Extreme as all go-headlining. It was a weird situation cause at that point ALAE had been out for 7 months and it was already apparent the album was not a hit. it was the 1st signs of Dave's decline in popularity....

but i've always thought his shows were fun. it's just recently that i've lost interest in seeing him live. i remain a fan and would buy a new album regardless but you know how it goes...

the 2 Cleveland Skyscraper shows were sellouts. i remeber a full house at Blossom for the ALAE tour, too, even though the crowd was a bit thin for opener Extreme.

My memory is that the Skyscraper tour was popular and very profitable, and that the ALAE was the most un-profitable tour of that year.

I saw Dave on both of them tours. The Skyscraper show in Hartford was great. He did 'Just Like Paradise' and rode the surfboard to the middle of the arena. Then they played the 'Star Spangled Banner' while Dave climbed a rope to a boxing ring at the top of the arena. Then, they played 'Panama' as the ring was lowered. Then, the played 'California Girls' as Dave rode the surf board back to the stage. It was so cool. The '91 tour stopped at an amusement park across the street from ESPN. Extreme and Cinderella opened. I thought it drew pretty well.

When The Skyscraper Tour came to SLC in the spring of '88 it was sold out. Just Like Paradise was big on the radio at the time and Poison was the opening act. It was a killer show. ALAE was cancelled about two weeks before even coming to town due to poor ticket sales. So I never saw it.

1991 was the end of 80's rock and so that tour not doing well wouldn't be a surprise. The kids were moving from the glam sound to Pearl, Nirvana, Metalica, REM, Vanilla Ice and NKOTB . DLR had no ties to glam as a memeber of VH but that is what his act had become or percieved to be by the time the late 80's and early 90's came around.

That was the time I graduated college and it was hard enough to still get some respect for VH and F.U.C.K. on campus much less Cinderella and DLR. The world of music changed from Dec. 1990 to Jaunuary 1992. I'm not a rock historian but that is how I remember it, which doesn't say much.

Skyscaper was a profitable tour, but ALAE got cancelled due to lack of interest. I remember seeing a piece on MTV talking about how concerts were a tough sell in 91 because of the recession. Few acts were drawing well. One of the acts drawing well was VH, so I am sure that must of drove Dave nuts.

The Skyscraper tour was a great show and it too was sold out when I saw it. One of the problems with ALAE is that it seemed that everytime Dave went out on tour it was new band, not all his fault, but still the impression.
