Not sure if this is the right forum...

Who's the better drummer? As much as I love VH... I think Nicko is much better than AVH...

Nicko McBrain is Iron Maiden's drummer, came on board for the "Piece of Mind" album and has been there ever since.

Don't ask me, not my thread. They're both good and both completely different types of players.

Truth here is that I was married to a drummer. A very talented drummer and a huge VH fan. He really loved both of these guys. He always said Nicko was better because he was faster and more creative. I just wondered what the rest of the VH
fan would say in comparrison...

Faster doesn't necessarily equal better. And you'd be hard pressed to find an Iron Maiden song faster than "Hot For Teacher" and "Get Up!" In fact, one doesn't exist. I always actually thought Clive Burr had a better groove than McBrain myself. They're both good, it's just a different style of music, but I don't think McBrain is any more creative than Al, certainly not on the old VH records.

AVH is the shit. Cool thing about AL is you hear his playing grow with each album. Open them ears and listen to only the drums, try to ignore everything else. Al is putting so many little ghost notes, bell hits, double kicks, quarter note triplets played at 260 BMP. Plenty of goodies that probably 90% of the people here don't pick up on. Here's a good example. Listen to Pleasure Dome, and listen to the beat Al is playing with his feet, under all the great work he's doing on top on the intro to that song. UNREAL. AL got his groove from Bonham for sure. He got his manic wild side from Moon, and his abilty to play odd times and play with the time from, Ginger Baker. Put them all together and you get AVH baybee!!

Nicko might be a better technical drummer but I think AVH has more flash to him. Nicko does his job, keeps the beat but I don't see as much of the double bass work or symbol work. AVH seems to be more inventive and like Brett said plays faster songs. He also (and this could just be the difference between the two bands) seems to have a more prevelant sound...like he's just back there beating the shit out of the skins and you can't help but know that he's there. Whereas, Nicko seems to be more in the background IMO.

Nicko is great, but I agree the styles are so different, I can't really compare them.
