While analyzing WACF they state that the first thing we here on Van Halen is Eddie's guitar and on VHII the first sound is Mikes bass and WACF the first thing is the organ. WTF? The first thing we hear on Van Halen is the slowed down car horn and then we hear Mikes bass. They also screwed up the intro lyrics to "Beautiful Girls" "She was a ringside sittin'"

Well, technically on the first album you hear the backward horns and the bass first. But then that killer huge fucking riff comes roaring out. On the second album you do hear Mike's wild bass intro first. On Women & Children First the first sound we hear, the intro to Cradle Will Rock, is indeed an old baby grand piano Edward had that he ran through a cranked up Marshall Stack! That is why many had no idea it was a piano at all since he ran it through a Marshall Stack cranked to the max with full distortion.

I believe they were Volvo horns. I think Al had the old Volvo, it may have even been a combination of a Volvo and an Opal (I think) horn. One of them had an Opal, one had a Volvo I think.

I have one interview with Ed where he said they were a collection of horns including VW's, and Al's old Opel. Does that ring a bell with anyone else?

Oops Brett beat me to it.

I remember reading that it was a Volvo. Dave had an old Opel. Did Alex have one too?

Here it is from the man himself...

GP: What’s the sound at the opening of “Runnin’ With the Devil”?

EVH: Car horns. We took the horns out of all our cars -- my brother’s Opel, my old Volvo, ripped a couple out of a Mercedes and a Volkswagon -- and mounted them in a box and hooked two car batteries to it and added a footswitch. We just used them as noisemakers before we got signed. Ted put it on tape, slowed it down, and then we came in with the bass. It sounds like a jet landing.

    Pretty cool...

I always thought it sounded like a UFO landing...

    "......HEY!.............alright............." -BIG FOOT

" I know what you're thinking: "Do I want to watch Mard? We know that horses were very strong and could actually stop airplanes from flying away. The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!

But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!-
