You know...there's just something about classic VH that to MY ears they've never been able to match. In their early albums they played with this unreal intensity...like they had something to prove. I'm not saying that later VH hasn't had energy, but it doesn't seem like they played with something to prove...probably because they had already proved it by this time. Even an album like Diver Down, which some people see as an inferior DLR era album, has incredible energy. I mean listen to the intro to Pretty Woman even or The Full Bug. They were pouring their guts out whether people liked it or not. The post-DLR era stuff I still enjoy. Especially F.U.C.K., but their music came more refined and straight up. It's just that when I heard the first few VH albums, they blew my mind. I realize if DLR does come back, they probably won't be able to match these classics, but I'd still die to hear the chance and how they'd move forward. And I guess with VH3, they now do have something to prove again...and what better way to do it then going back to your roots.

Now, I'm not looking to start an argument with anyone about what era he/she likes likes better. So please don't. I just happened to be cranking some classic VH, renoticed the insane amounts of energy, and felt the need to sympathize with some other hardcore fans here at the vhlinks...Peace...

I think that energy that dave gave them
is a little like punk music. With Dave
they had that raw sound with a huge helping of attitude.

with hagar they sounded like an across-the-board rock arena band.

if ya don't get where i'm coming from i'm sorry. it's hard to put in words sometimes.

If only Dave and Eddie could have found a way to deal with their personal stuff back in the day...

Can you guys imagine what they could have produced?

I know it's a question that could drive you insane, and furthermore, it's a question that we'll never get the answer to.

    But I still wonder...

Classic VH is just unstoppable, IMO. It's a bad-ass brew of testosterone, wit, street-smarts, and lust for life (and chicks ).

The first 6 albums were a fantastic ride. All the way from the first sound of the car-horn of "Runnin' With The Devil" to the dying notes of "House Of Pain."

The way I see it, Dave's energy pushed Ed's writing. Ed's writing, in turn, pushed Dave's lyrics. Dave's attitude pushed Ed's buttons, which in turn pushed Ed's songwriting.

And we're all better for it.

What's still mind boggling to me is how much Dave-era songs were already written BEFORE the first album, and record labels rejected them until 1977. Every Dave era album has something from pre-1977 boots in some form, whether it be a complete song or riff. "House Of Pain" didn't come out until 1984! (I liked the original demo version FWIW)

van halen is one of a kind. i don't think anyone could match the sound that they've produced. the amount of energy that they have in some of their songs (listening to "on fire" right now) and the way that they kept the energy through to balance and then to CGTSNM and me wise magic. there is a reason that they are the greatest band in the world, and you guys all know why.
