I don't know if anyone has posted this or not, but there's a cool video interview on TechTV with Sammy Hagar. It's pretty funny.

Thanks, xaminer. That was a cool interview!

I especially like the part where he said he hired a guy to do www.cabowabo.com and said "It's expensive!"

I never thought opening a website would cost a lot of money?

What do you suppose it cost?
"Keep honking buddy. I'm reloading..." -The Mard

"......HEY!.............alright............." -BIG FOOT

" I know what you're thinking: "Do I want to watch Mard? We know that horses were very strong and could actually stop airplanes from flying away. The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!

But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!-

Cost for a web site can vary widely. If you do your own html or java programming and utilize default web space provided by your ISP it's pretty cheap. Some of the smaller web hosting companies are relatively inexpensive and you pay for only what you use. So if you are a motivated web hacker you can create your own stuff and run pretty cheap.

But if you go with one of the major web hosting companies... you can rack up a lot of expense for... consulting on design, content, volume/traffic. Then pay for professional programmers to design the site and build in any/all cgi custom function and security. Then there is the actual hosting fee, which can range from a flat fee per month to a flat fee plus metered fees based on traffic at the site. Additional charges can rack up if you want a lot of changes but need 7x24x365 uptime.

Small site on Yahoo will run you 14.95 per month for the space. Domain names I believe from Yahoo are free, but from NIC are 35 for annual registration.

Pretty cheap if you make the site yourself.

I'm a novice, maybe some web heads can be more accurate.

Web hosting can run from about $5 all the way on up to several hundred to several thousands dollars per month, depending on how much space and transfer (bandwidth) you need. I doubt it if the Cabo Wabo site needs half of what Brett uses for VHLinks/VHForums (although Sammy might be paying outrageous prices for hosting...I don't know).

Site creation greatly depends on what kind of site you want. Simple, "brochure"-type pages are easy and relatively inexpensive and most people can do it themselves with a general knowledge of HTML and a simple graphics program. But when you start talking about outlandish graphics, custom scripts, e-commerce capabilities, database connectivity, and so on, web developers can charge you an arm and a leg. Hourly rates for this kind of stuff is all over the map (I charge $25-$55/hour myself, which I consider to be VERY reasonable). They could be gauging Sammy on this, too.

No domain names are free. They run from about $8.95 (at the rinky-dink companies) to about $30 (at Network solutions/VeriSign) per year to register a name.

Maybe Sammy should ask Dave how to have a website maintained for free!
