When I think back to the Dave heydays, you never saw Van Halen on those award shows. They were commerically popular but only within the "hard rock" niche. Van Halen aren't a top 40 type band, so it stands to follow that they're appeal with the MTV crowd, would be limited. These type of shows have always catered to what's current.

I dunno...In 1984 (and later with Sammy) they were all over MTV. Videos, contests, interviews, etc.

Yeah they have been on mtv quite a bit, they played live on spring break, at the beach, and they once played a 19 minute segment on the music awards, longest ever btw. If you watched some of the old highlights from past years' shows you will see VH in quite a few clips. They have won awards and been presenters as well. And who can forget 96? So all in all I would say vh has had its share of air time on mtv. Too bad mtv doesn't recognize this.
Lets all face it, VH is a one hit wonder... They were only popular for about 6 months to a year... I'm going to go listen to some skee lo.
