I am especially posting this for the dude who keeps posting about the supposed first meeting between Nirvana and EVH, which supposedly went sour due to Ed's tremendous alchoholic state.

I too have the book 'Heavier Than Heaven'. In it it states "Kurt walked in to find his one time hero stumbling about.." etc..

Well I have recently run into several interviews with the author of this very honest book, Mr. Charles R. Cross, who states that this is 100% true. It is a FACT. Kurt Cobain, in Mr. Cross's own words, "WORSHIPPED" Van Halen as a teen. He had their records in his collection and was just in love with Van Halen. Shortly after though he discovered punk and I guess realizing the whole "punk attitude" kinda left VH and other bands behind and kept secret about having ever liked them at all.

Add to that the myth Mr. Cross shattered about Black Flag being Kurt's first concert when it was actually the Red Rocker Sammy Hagar! Kurt was 16 when he saw Sammy in 1983!

Kurt liked Sammy Hagar AND worshipped classic Van Halen!! Oh man, I can hear indie hearts a breakin'.. haha!!

The stupid thing about that is Eddie Van Halen is the original shredder, the original innovator, the revolutionary player. Shunning Van Halen's music is pathetic considering they are far more original than so many of the stupid ass indy punk bands he idolized.

I remember hearing or seeing in a documentary somewhere that he was also a big fan of KISS.

Therein lies the walking contradiction that was Kurt. This dude loved so many different bands like The Beatles, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, The Who, Queen, Van Halen, Kiss, Cheap Trick, The Knack, Boston, Judas Priest, Devo and many more..
He even did a cover of Baba O' Reilly and of Led Zep tunes on some very early bootlegs from 1987-1989.

But the dude wanted so much of that silly indie credibility and to be part of that scene that he hid all this. The funny thing is a lot of those people liked these bands too! They were just hiding it as well. Unless you are like Henry Rollins of Black Flag, who has the balls to stand up and declare his love for Van Halen and Led Zep. Kurt shoulda learned from Henry..

Ole Kurt was no different than any other teenager/high schooler at the start of the 1980's-sitting in his room, probably stoned, cutting his teeth on Van Halen records. It trips me out to think of Kurt sitting up in his room in Aberdeen, Washington tryin' to jam along to Fair Warning or Van Halen 1...

i knew a friend of a friend who was a really shit-hot guitar player but was so socially inept that he rarely played with anyone else. we used to go to his place and drink coffee and get high and he would put highway to hell or fair warning on the turntable (still listened to vinyl) and we would sit and watch him play along and enjoy his comments about how the guitars were tuned to accomodate the singers and such.

I have known a couple dudes like that. I think even Steve Morse once said that the best guitarist in the world could be some dude who just comes homes from his 9-5 job, plops down on the couch and just jams...

And yea, again, Kurt shoulda taken a lesson from other dudes like Henry Rollins, Billy Corgan and others who despite being involved in different music scenes, came clean and proudly declared how VH tocuhed them..

I dont know if any of you recall the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but right as the guitar solo starts, if you pay attention, you see Kurt jokingly tapping EVH style on the neck of the guitar...

Probably mocking it as so many from that era of rock did.

Obviously as VH fans we are spoiled cuz Eddie is God. But Kurt wasnt a clueless boob either man.
Look at all the band he grew up on. He obviously had good taste and knew great guitar driven bands, even if he later hide that fact.

I have heard some of those old bootlegs and you'd be surprised some of the things he could do. I heard him do Zep tunes and it was pretty decent, not too shabby. He knew about guitars, amps, etc..
Got some cool use out of a chorus pedal and whatnot, and was actually very picky about his guitars and amps. I actually have interviews where he even talked about Hendrix and he knew quite a bit about ole' Jimi.
We know Kurt isnt a damn brilliant player, but he actually got further, wrote more killer tunes and touched more people than the majority of those Berkley Conservatory musicians ever will.. And those guys could play circles around him.. I just felt he played his guts out with what God gave him.. And isnt that what rock is supposed to be? Just average everyday dudes who buck the odds, pay their dues, play hard and write some cool tunes?

That is one person's opinion. He sure could write a song though. Nevermind is a classic album from beginning to end. Period. End of story.
