I herd from reliable sources in Toto that Steve Lukather played lead guitar on one VH album because Eddie was so screwed up on Alcohol. They won't divulge what album it is, I hear that it is either WCF, FW, or Diver down. Has anyone else herd this? I know the powers that be will want to wisk this away to the rumor section. However this was very long ago. I do know that Eddie is friends with Lukather and he does ask him questions on some muiscal issues.

If you go to Lukather's website, you'll find that he is credited as playing on the Balance record. It it unclear as to what song/part/solo etc., but the credit is there nonetheless. Granted. . .it might also be a vocal credit, but Luke is usually hired to play guitar on record. . .not sing.

HeadHunter-How do you know it's not true? If your assuming Lukather can't play like Eddie you'd be wrong because he is a very diverse guitar player. How would you know if he copied Eddie's style for a VH album.

This has got to be the STUPIDEST rumor I've ever heard. What idiot dreamed this up? There is no way in hell that this could even be possible. Just listen to the albums for chrissakes...it's Eddie all the way. Steve's a great guitarist and all, but he can't play or sound like Edward. Luke's played on dozens of records, but it always sounds like him..no matter what he does. Total BULLSHIT!!

In this interview with Andrew at melodicrock.com, Luke confirms that he did some background vocals on Van Halen records.

Listen guys I'm only relaying what I herd. I have friends who are personal friends with most of the guys in Toto. Personal.... as in they stay at one or two of the bandmembers house. They say that Lukather played guitar one VH album because of Eddie's alcholism at that time. They will not say what record. I'm trying to get that info. I'm not trying to start a rumor or be an idiot here. This comes right from the guys in Toto.

Vince is willing to admit that he has sources "reliable sources in Toto." LOL. He's also willing to float this ridiculous rumor. Both things put everything else he says on Links in perspective.

Background vocals sounds fairly reasonable, and hell, I could see Luke guesting on guitar for a song or two. HOWEVER, anyone with any intelligence can tell that Edward is playing on those albums. Tell your "sources" they don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

Ok Lurker, There is a 70's-80's Concert at an amusement part in Rye NY, Bobby Kimball is one of the performers. Don't know the name of the amusement park and I'm not attending. I'm NOT just putting this out there as some bullshit rumor I made up. This came from Muscians. Do you think that if infact this was true, and I say that because I have no way of substantiating it one way or the other. Do you think that VH would want to publish this? You would be surprised how many times stuff like this has happened on Rock records and we have no way of knowing. There are many Studio musicians that can mimik the style and play of another guitarist. Don't for one minute think that this could not happen.

Well I might possibly believe he did a little bit of background vocals, but filling in on guitar that just doesn't sound right!?

Also I don't think TOTO would be the best source to find this information. Sounds like they're trying to sound cool to actually get some attention.
