Ain't talking 'bout love here. Duets? Forget it. Roth, 46, and Hagar, 54, go to their respective corners nightly, each with his own band, set list and grudges. Aside from solo tune Yankee Rose, Roth fixates on Halen hits: Hot for Teacher, Panama, Runnin' With the Devil, Jump. Hagar and his Waboritas band mix solo fare (I Can't Drive 55) and Halen highlights (Right Now, Dreams, Finish What Ya Started). They flipped a coin to determine opening-night slots and have been swapping positions since.

The unholy union of Diamond Dave and the Red Rocker was the byproduct of a Las Vegas casino's scheme to bring Hagar, Roth and Van Halen together for big-bucks stadium shows. Eddie Van Halen nixed it. Roth contacted Hagar to salvage two-thirds of the idea, and the Sam & Dave prizefight was born.

The two agreed to square off (in separate phone interviews) on a variety of topics.

Their reasons for doing the tour

Sammy Hagar: There are always fears that this will look cheap. It's not cheap. It's very cool. If Van Halen were out there playing with another singer, we wouldn't bother. But they've been hiding for so long. Dave and I are giving fans the gift they deserve, and we'll try to blow each other off the stage.

David Lee Roth: This is a bit of Americana. The period I was quarterback for Van Halen is as familiar as McDonald's arches and the Nike swoosh. It was my music, too. I wrote half of every song, half the musical changes and chord patterns, every single title. I designed the show and told you to show up.

Their sales pitch

Hagar: I have 50 people sitting with me on a stage designed like (an upscale) bar. There's a 30-by-40-foot video screen, a set of bleachers and four waitresses and bartenders serving drinks. I'm taking the Cabo Wabo (his Baja cantina) lifestyle on the road.

Roth: Sam's approach is to replicate his club with people having fun on stage. That sounds like a Dr Pepper commercial. How about a mind-roasting, brain-blasting, straight-through-the-church-ceiling, intellectual, slutty, hallelujah Day-Glo chorus show? Dream big!

Their willingness to bury the hatchet

Hagar: Dave's a comical character with a lot of good one-liners, and he dragged me through the coals. He was so sure when he left that they'd shrivel up and die, but we sold 42 million records and sold out every venue for 11 years. It drove Dave nuts because his solo career wasn't so hot.

Roth: I'm the son of Satan and my duties now are largely ceremonial. Sam's just an angel.

Their current ties to Eddie Van Halen

Hagar: I've had zero communication with Eddie. I've avoided finding a reason to make contact, because I know there would be talk of getting back together. And I would feel bad about leaving The Waboritas.

Roth: No communication, pure dysfunction. Any conflicts I had with the guitar player are a moot point. Did I mention I'm doing a porno video with (Van Halen's wife) Valerie Bertinelli?

Their predictions of a Van Halen reunion

Hagar: It's not impossible, but I'm trying to stay away from it. I'm more mature, I'm a better songwriter, and part of me would like to see what Eddie and I could do now.

Roth: Don't hold your breath. There's probably no possibility at this point. If Eddie is guilty of anything, it's wasting time. He's wasted years.

Their thoughts on Van Halen's third singer

Hagar: It didn't work because they picked the wrong guy (Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone, who made his debut on 1998's Van Halen III, the band's worst-selling album). Van Halen III should have been an instrumental record. It would have done just as well and wouldn't have destroyed Van Halen.

Roth: If Roth's not in the band, who cares?

Their shared traits

Hagar: Van Halen became very musical during my era and more serious about our art. We didn't party ourselves to death.

Roth: Any similarities between Sam's reality and mine are clearly coincidental. Sam tries to create a party. I am the party.

Their influence on each other

Hagar: I've learned from Dave what not to do, how not to dress. He used to do one of my Montrose songs, Make It Last, before Van Halen even had a record deal. I've probably had a bigger influence on who David Lee Roth is than he's had on me.

Roth: Sammy who?

Their odds of prevailing in a slugfest

Hagar: I could take Dave in a fight. He even admitted it to Howard Stern. But I'm a lover, not a fighter. We control our animosity through music. The nights he closes the show, my whole premise is to walk off that stage thinking, "Let him try to follow that."

Roth: Everything he's discussing is fist-fighting and boxing. Plug in and shut up, Sam. Stop whining and just play. I'm an instigator, but I'm not a bully.

Their reflections on lessons of the past

Hagar: I wish I had quit Van Halen instead of letting it get really ugly, where Eddie and I were battling every day. As soon as I left, my wings came out. I'm free, I'm rich, I'm famous, I can do anything I want. I had a new album out in six months.

Roth: I've always been academic. I've trained in martial arts since my 12th birthday. I like contact sports, history books and the fine art of ridicule and sarcasm. I can gang-sign the alphabet and I own a Mercury low-rider. I am a black man trapped in a Jewish body.

Thanks for posting the interview. Sam and Dave were pretty straight and to the point, which I liked. Instead of telling the fans nothing, they tell it like it is. As for the reunion, you know those two would love a chance to record and tour with Eddie, Mike and Al just one more time. I say give the fans one last hurrah just to close that chapter of the story.

I did have to agree with Sammy on how VHIII would have done just as well without Gary but wouldn't have ruined the band.

This never evnding soap opera is so sad. I'm going to try to catch the Sam & Dave tour for my chance to see and hear =VH= live.

What's the saddest thing is how much =VH= has slipped in the minds and hearts of alot of rock fans. If I post in other bands websites, and I mention that I'm a =VH= fan, I get laughed at, have my sanity questioned, or the "who are they?" question. I could give a rats ass.......but just knowing how much all this is destroying what was the definition of American Rock & Roll is depressing.......................

Has Eddie turned into Howard Hughes??!??......

Bueller....Bueller......Bueller......Bueller....

sorry for the cry session................

I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of the peeps who visit this and other =VH= sites are doing it while there at work during the day. It's an escape from the daily bull shit we face.......so I know I'm in trouble when work is starting to look better than "no news is good news" day aftr day year after year..........UGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Theres a link to the tour dates in that article and it is titled "Van Halen" tour dates. I wish.
I should qualify that by stating that it is the online article that I am talking about. I haven't
seen the actual USA today.

There have been rumors that Dave did take part in the writing of the music during his tenure in VH, and this might be true after this fairly bold statement saying that he, "wrote half of every song, half the musical changes and chord patterns, every single title." Whether or not DLR did actually partake in writing of half of every musicla change and chord pattern, is only truly known by Ed, Mike, Dave, and Al..............but my guess is that Eddie came up with "all or most" of the MAIN Riffs initially during the writing of a song...and maybe DLR was good at coming up with key change ideas and chord patterns in songs, when Ed and the boys were stuck....who knows...
And maybe he was good at coming up with further developement of the songs stucture and completing the song....when Ed and the boys were again maybe stuck....who knows...who cares...

But I have always felt that during Dave's tenure the songwriters in VH were Ed and Dave.....

anyway....whatever....who cares...

Can't wait to see the show here in Jersey...I got a tip from a friend and ex-bandmate, that he will be able to hook me up with GOOD seats for the PNC show in Holmdel, NJ....Here's to HOPE!!!

Roth takes credit for half the songs during his tenure with the band? Sounds like his creativity was more like Dancin' in the Streets, Ice Cream Man, You Really got Me,etc......notice the pattern here? He admits that redoing a successful cover tune will send it skyrocketing through the charts because of EVH musical talents............which translates into $$$$ Like old Diamond Dave's quote" I'm just a "Black man in a Jewish man's Body" You couldn't of said it any better Dave!!

Roth quote...."When I was the quarterback of Van Halen" Dave, it's 2002, you were never the quarterback of a pop-warner football team let alone a major rock band. You need to wake up out of your pot-smoking, ego-filled dreamworld and re-watch your 1996 MTV assinine performance again!! Quarterback.......yea right. I believe the QB title falls on EVH' lap. We as fans have justified that every day since 1985 when you went on to your "successful solo career?" Does the word "Has-Been" have any significance to you? Get over yourself. Then you make another dumb ass quote the other day about starring in a porno with EVH's wife. I thought those sex filled fantasies were a thing of the past? Wonder why MA doesn't want him around? These guys (VH Bros and MA) have families now and don't want some 46 yr old "Has Been" trying to relive the "glory days" Those days are over Dave! You can't get them back. Watch past videos of yourself and brag to others how great you were. That should stroke your ego!! Go back to some dump in Vegas where you belong!

Don't get too excited to see Val nowadays. She films Touched by an Angel here and I saw her in a restaurant last February. Her rear has become as large as Ed's obsession for Sam and Dave to wear cups. Not to rip on her personally, but just not porno material.

Anyone who doesn't like David Lee Roth is a faggot. Period.

ANYONE who thinks Sammy even REMOTELY approaches the same stgratospheric league of Dave is missing at least two testicles.

Sammy Hagar is nothing more than an ego-filled, second rate musician, mediocre singer (at best) and BORING perfromer, not to mention an irritating LIAR and HYPPOCRITE. (a la his OUTRAGEOUS and bltanatly mistruthful record sales quoutes.)

His solo records have sold LESS than David Lee Roth (PROVEN fact), and he has had ZERO success post-VH. And that includes his pathetic shows of a few hundred people. Sammy can't even sell 4,000 seats in a 6,000 seater. This is a proven fact.

DAve played to 70,000 in Finland in 1999. The MAJORITY of casual fans are seeing this tour because of Dave, not Sammy. The crowd response is proof positive.

Van Hagar sold HALF what Van Halen sold. Proven FACT. VH continues to sell a million units a year. Van Hagar can barely be found in a record store.

Sammy is a fat pathetic slob. Diamond Dave is still doing the mid-air splits. Sammy Hagar dresses like a clown, and is wearing WOMEN'S capri pants on stage, as evidenced in the recent tour photos.

Sammy Hagar, I repeat, is a fucking joke and an embarrassment to the band that DAVE brought to fame.

Further still, Dave did in fact write many of the melodies to the songs. Eddie is a pian ist and riff writer. VDIII PROVES Eddie is a MEDIOCRE song writer start to finish.

I wish Sammy would just fuck off and shut up. Everything he spews is pure horseshit.
