    BACK TO THE FUTURE

I don't know if you remember, but at one moment of the film, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) put a tape (were it's written "Eddie Van Halen") in his walkman, and we just could ear a (great) guitar solo. What's the title of the song?

Its not from any song. I have a magazine interview where Eddie said Speilberg just asked for some music so he just picked up a tape laying around with some of his playing on it and gave it to Speilberg. And the rest is history!

No, Ashe is right. I read the same interview. I also remember Ed saying he didn't even get paid for it. He just gave it to Spielberg and that was it.

Being a huge fan of BTTF (first movie I ever remember seeing!) I'm gonna come on in with a few more details

The music in question is called "donut city" and was orginally used in another Robert Zemekis film earlier on in the eighties.

I think its Fast times at Ridgemont High, but I'm not sure. Anyway its a bitchin piece, innit?

Donut City was from The Wild Life, 1985.

The piece of music in question was from The Wild Life, but it was not "Donut City". It was an untitled piece of music that didn't appear on the TWL soundtrack:

    http://www.van-halen.com/newsite/backfuture.html

"Donut City" (details here) was a longer, song-oriented instrumental reminiscent of Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose".

And while we're on the subject of BTTF...

You can catch a VH-related mistake while watching the "Did You Know That? Universal Animated Anecdotes" version of the first movie on DVD. The "popup" message during the Darth Vader scene says that that very piece of EVH music that Marty played for his dad was titled "Donut City" on The Wild Life soundtrack; and, of course as I just said, it wasn't...

For a long time after I heard Ed on Beat It and that part in Back To The Future I was like man I bet he made a ton for those little solos. Wrong? Not that he needed money, but does anyone know if Michael or Speilberg did Ed any favors? Then again if I was ever in Eds position I would play solos like that for free. LOL

    According to Lukather here:

Q: (June 13 2001) Hi Luke, a while ago I met a Van Halen fan and we started discussing the various Lukather-Van Halen collaborations. He claims the following: in the first Back to the future movie there's a scene where Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) plays a heavy metal tape in his walkman to scare the sh*t out of someone in the 50'ies. In the credits Eddie van Halen is credited for this guitar solo, but the Van Halen fan said that it wasn't Eddie, but Steve Lukather.... (Dennie Heye)

Luke: I don't think that was Eddie in Back to the Future. It was a studio guy named Tim May, an old friend who does TV/film work. His name is on the credits. I believe they were going for an Eddie "simulation".

Somebody get out their trusty =VH= Encyclopedia!!!

Mine's @ home unfortunately. I do remember reading a snippet about that in the book though.
Q: Recording the album took so long your Australian tour last year was cancelled. What was it like in the studio? There's a history of tension between you and Eddie Van Halen...

DLR: It was like a stand off in a Chuck Norris movie. We each had the laser dot on everybody's forehead waiting for the other guy to blink. Except for Wolfie, he had a Super Soaker ...

The VHE says the same thing Scott did.

I think Steve was a bit confused as to the question (heh... spoken like a true Dome mod, eh? ). Tim May played Marty McFly's guitar parts in the movie (the audition, the JBG solo, etc.) The EVH-labeled recording is Edward.

That little piece from the tape isnt mentioned in the credits, neither is Eddies name.

But "I can't drive 55" is in BTTF2 in the alternate 1985. Random trivia for you there
