Rumors Of A Van Halen Show In April Are False

(12/22/00, 7 a.m. ET) - Van Halen will definitely NOT be playing a show at a new venue in Georgia in April.

That's the word from a spokesperson at the still-under-construction Starlight Amphitheater, which has been inundated by calls from anxious fans.

Roger Wilson, executive vice president of sponsorship sales at Event Tickets -- the organization that is handling seating for the 27,000-seat venue, which is expected to open in mid-April -- told LAUNCH that the company has been running local advertisements touting its "Concert Cash" program, which gives people who sign up a card with a pre-paid cash value. Anyone who joins the program will then get three days' advance notice via email on any show booked for the Starlight, as well as the opportunity to buy tickets before a show is announced to the general public. Without saying which acts will appear at the Starlight, the advertisements list high-profile performers who have 2001 tour plans, like Bob Dylan, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, David Bowie, Jeff Beck, and Peter Gabriel.

Somehow, some of the operators at the company's toll-free order center (866-EVENTIX, or 866-383-6849) were led to believe that the Van Halen signing was official, and they were relaying that information to callers.

That caused a frenzy among fans, who haven't heard any news of the band since Gary Cherone left the group in 1999.

Wilson released the following statement to clear up any misconceptions:

    "To whom it may concern:

"Please understand that no acts have been booked for Starlight Amphitheater at this time. Not only is Van Halen NOT touring (to our best knowledge are not in contact with, or under any negotiation with Van Halen tour management. As with all other amphitheaters, we would not anticipate confirming any engagements until some time in early 2001, after scheduling and routing details have been addressed by the various management organizations.

"We apologize for any misrepresentations that may have been made or implied on our behalf. Our advertising media is clear and does NOT make any mention of booked acts and only identifies acts that we KNOW are touring, which DOES NOT include Van Halen.

"Please assist us in STOPPING this rumor.

    "Thank you very much."

My question is who led the operators to believe VH were touring and why? Surely the operators would be reasonably certain of info before it passing on to callers?

Yeah, really. I think it's official that the Starlight has denied a VH booking, not that no contact has taken place. They've certainly gone out of their way to deny the rumours without offering any explanation whatsoever why their operators would have been giving rather specific information 2 days ago.
