O.K. Listen first before you trash me!!! I'm being the devil's advocate here...Is 20 years too long for a band to be around? Hey, is 10 years too long?

    Beatles...out in less than 10
    The Police...5 albums-6 years

Just curious about everyone's perspective here...I mean, does anyone really get excited about the Stones anymore?

    Aerosmith...200 years, 100 albums

The Rolling Bones...650 years, 2000 albums.

I never cared what the Rolling Bones were doing, so I am the wrong person to ask.

Different bands have different life spans. What with the singer chances, VH gets a new lease on life every now and then. You'll find no one here that contends that all three eras sound alike. The new stuff will probably sound different than anything we've heard.

So long as people enjoy the music, who cares how long a band has been together?

if a band evolves and grows, they can be around for 100 years, just as long as john q is buying IMO

Hell no. As long as they can play their instruments they should make music.

I don't believe that Van Halen has been around too long. If the Rolling Stones can keep churning out albums and massive tours, then I don't see it. IMO, I think VH still has quite a few great years left. Think about how much music is just sitting around at 5150. I mean the band has put out only 1 new studio album in 5 years. They'll keep rockin for a long time.

Vh are true legends who will never get their just due. Certain bands who started in the 70s will always be looked at differently than VH (Zeppelin,Aerosmith, Kiss,Sabbath). Vh's main problem to me started in '96. Whereas it is somewhat normal for bands to change members throughout 20 years VH has handled it poorly. People accepted Sammy for the most part after DLR. But in their minds DLR was always a possibility for a return. After 96 Vh was considered a laughingstock who turned their backs on the fans. I'm sure that there are things that we haven't heard about in that situation, but Vh has done little to dispell the negativity associated with that fiasco. The little " you better be wearing a cup" statement made the brothers appear stupid.

In an age where longevity is associated with 2-3 albums, VH still has plenty to bring to the table. Will it be as big as 96 could have been? No. They had the world antsily anticipating the return of DLR. MTV was running commercials and even ESPN made remarks. Now just a few webheads at the links ,etc. are the main anticipaters. We gripe and complain about no news, but the greater music scene is not so interested.

In my opinion there has never been enough tragedy surrounding Van Halen for the rock world to make them legends. They're legends to me, but not to the rock community in general. And I don't care about that, I just care about great music, and VH has always provided that.

LOL! Age is a mind frame and music isn´t like football or hockey. If you are a true musician, it´s for life.

the thing i like about van halen, is the fact that they have indeed endured through so much. so far, their musical prowress has taken them through three decades of music. they helped end the dico era (may or may not be to ur liking) they helped pioneer the mtv era and keyboards in rock n roll music with jump. they were an entirely different band with sammy and gary, and have somehow managed to keep their heads above water amidst all the commotion surrounding the band publicly and privately. and with dave back in the fold, it will be in their 4th decade of music, and that is extraordinary!!

10 years? 20 years? Nah, VH will always reinvent itself.

Look what happened after DLR left: A lot of people wrote them off as has-beens and what did they do? Sell millions of records, play to packed houses all over the world, and kick some serious boo-tay. Different band? Yes, BUT still an excellent one at that.

The third incarnation, of course was not well-received by the public, but Hagar already had a built-in following when VH came calling, unlike GC (and don't start squalling about Extreme--they don't have NEAR the fans Hagar does). So the cards were stacked against them, as was rock radio. That's why "3" was the worst selling album in VH history.

The basic truth is, if Eddie is still around, he'll be making music one way or another--with or without the other guys. Van Halen is, and always will be, Edward Van Halen and company.

Don't agree? I'll leave you with this: In the 80’s, EVH brings in new lead singer after mammoth success and continues along that path without skipping a beat. DLR fans grumble, some bail out of camp, but so many MORE SH fans come in, it doesn't even create a ripple in the sea of Haleness. DLR goes solo, spouting about movies and such, gets himself a long line of EVH-wannabe guitar players, plays 2 or 3 of his own tunes in concert and a whole log of VH ones, and his career goes...where? Just listen, and you'll hear a flushing sound. The VH reunion is the only thing between him and a career as the scuzzy guy you see announcing all the dancers in second-rate strip clubs. It's his last chance.

theres a ton of bands out there that have been around for 20 years or more. if they can still prove that they can rock and they still fill the venues, then i say keep on rockin'!
