    Okay here is the scoop.

The latest issue of Rolling Stone (December 7, 2000) features their ranking of the all time 100 Pop songs.

Our heroes in Van Halen come in at #47 with Jump.

According to the 'Letter from the Editor', the list was compiled in conjunction with MTV (VHND take note)who will air the Top Pop 100 over five nights starting on November 20.

For those of you that don't have ready access to the magazine here are the entire contents:

    47
    Van Halen
    Jump
Album: 1984 Release date: December 1983
Peak chart position: No. 1 for five weeks (twenty-one weeks on the chart)
Songwriters: Edward Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony
    Producer: Ted Templeton (sp)

"Jump is more of an attitude than a story," says ex-Van Halen singer David Lee Roth. "It's a 'lead with your face' attitude - and I've been places with my face that you wouldn't go with a pistol."
Arguably the greatest triumph of Roth-era Van Halen, "Jump" is a stunningly catchy pop-rocker driven by then-uncharacteristic synth work from guitar god Eddie Van Halen. The simple but remarkably effective performance video was made for a reported $6,000; by showcasing Roth's gymnastic abilities and Eddie Van Halen's chops and winning grin, it transformed Van Halen into massive MTV stars.
Eddie Van Halen even once said that the song made a small contribution to Roth's leaving the band. Eddie had built a "clubhouse studio," 5150, on the grounds of his Los Angeles home. "I think Dave and our producer Ted Templeman were threatened by that," says Van Halen. "The first thing I did up here was 'Jump,' and they didn't like it. I said, 'Take it or leave it.'" By the following summer, Roth had decided to leave it, and went off to pursue a solo career.

There it is folks, Van Halen makes the Top 100.

Not only the top 100, but the top HALF of the top 100.

    Hell yeah.

Shoulda been in the top 10 simply because it was the first recognizable " pop" tune by a " metal" band to be that successful. Talk about bridging gaps.

VAN HALEN rewrote the rules of rock 'n roll!

PS...is VH really metal?? That is the question.

Pretty sweet! Hey is anyone following the VH 1 100 Best Hard Rock Artists? They were up to the 50's last night and still not mentioned Van Halen.

Wonder where VH will be on that list. Any ideas?

In I984, yes Van Halen was metal. By today's standards....no.

BrokenCombs, as I recall, VH is really high, lke in the single digets around 5-7. There's another thread on this board about it, feel free to look it up.

Now, having seen the entire top 100 list, I don't agree with a lot of songs (including I Want it That Way, Baby One More Time, and Bye Bye Bye as some of the best pop... um, no), but I'm just happy VH made it on the list seeing as they're not a pop band.

I guess that's a pretty good position. But I wonder, how many of the songs that are ahead of them on the list posted at Billboard's #1 position for at least 5 weeks. Can anybody shed light on that? 5 weeks is a pretty good amount of time to be at #1 with a single isn't it?

    Stuff No More,

That's for the info! It seems Jump has held up pretty damn well with the others on the list as far as weeks on the chart, and # of weeks at #1!

It seems since its Van Halen, Rolling Stone almost put it on there out of necessity - because God knows that mag has slighted VH throughout their entire career when they've had a story on the boys - or worse yet, no story at all. Throughout the great history of VH (22+ yrs. since their debut) - they've only been on the front cover twice.

I'm not sure I agree w/all of the songs placing higher than "Jump", but then again I have a tought time accepting a Van Halen song could be considered a "pop" song...

Actually, I agree with most of the list. This is one time where if VH was left off, I wouldn't mind - as they're not a "pop" band.

The ones I disagree with are entries like Smells Like Teen Spirit which wasn't even a pop crossover hit when it came out.

Makes me wonder what their criteria for picking the songs was.
