I have always thought this, but I thought I'd discuss it here. For a while, I thought VH was doing really well and releasing some kick-ass first singles from their releases. They were modern, decently heavy, melodic, musically interesting, and still had the integrity of what we expect from a VH tune. I am talking about:

Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)--Balance
Humans Being--Twister Soundtrack
Me Wise Magic--BOV1
Without You--VH3

4 great first singles, 3 singers, and yet they were all hits. And then of course, NOTHING. They were surprisingly, even as of 1998, the biggest band you could think of. What a difference 4 years can make. What is scary is that Human's Being was supposedly not as good as 'Between Us Two', which no one has ever heard, Me Wise Magic was one of 20 or so songs Ed and Dave went through to choose to work on, and was even skipped at first, and the version of Without You we hear was done in 45 minutes. There is still so much talent here. I still say Without You is a great song. I remember hearing it for the 1st time. I was very impressed. Oh well, I guess we sit and wait........

I think Van Halen has always had a history of coming out of the shoot really strong. When I first heard Poundcake a month or so before the release of FUCK I thought it was worth the wait. It seemed to take forever between OU812 and FUCK but who really cared because they came up with a kick ass record. A good first single really can set things up nicely for a record providing that the rest of the material is up to snuff. That's never really been a problem with Van Halen. Considering how long we've had to wait since VH3 I'm thinking that the new album assuming it eventually happens is going to have the greatest first single ever. Hopefully the wait will be over sooner rather than later.

Unlike some of those who post here often, I tend to like all three "eras" of VanHalen (although my favorite era so far has been the "Sammy" era). Musically, I think Van Halen is remarkable, no matter who fronts them. In 1996, although I was dissapointed when Sammy left Van Halen, upon hearing "Me Wise Magic" I remembered thinking that that song was one of the pieces of music Van Halen had ever written... Although VHIII was different, I thought it was a good CD....

I agree, Van Halen has a habit of coming out with some great singles. I also agree that VH still has some great music that nobody has heard yet. Hopefully, someday we will hear it.
