I have been asked by a lot of people, as to why Diamond Dave Performs mostly Old School VH, but nothing really New. My opinion is that, with production and distribution costs, He figures the payoff is not worth the investment. Especially when
Warner Brothers still sends Dave $$ for the old catalog. He figures, that if he can inroduce OLD VH
to a New, young crowd, maybe they will buy the old stuff, and keep the overhead at zero. It really makes a lot of sense, after seeing what Dave/Sam have sold of their last few solo efforts. This is only my opinion. What do you think?

You, me, Dave, and the rest of the world wants a Van Halen reunion. Dave knows this, and gives the fans as close to a Van Halen reunion as he can give.

Good Point. I had tickets for the last Sam/Dave show, and it was cancelled. I just picked up a pro shot video of Dave from this tour. I have to say that he's in excellent
shape vocally and physically. And, you are right; he's the real deal when it comes to the energy and spirit of VH. No disrespect to Sam, because
in truth, I'd take VH with either singer, at this point.

Think about the viability of his solo career in today's market. Fans still love classic Van Halen... but how well received do you think solo stuff would be? I know I wouldn't stay standing, it's not what I want to hear.

Ever go see a band that performs new songs and everyone sits down cause no one wants to hear it?

It's funny that some of you defend DLR playing VH almost exclusively in his live shows. If Sam (or Gary for that matter) did the same thing, you guys would be all over him accusing him of riding the coat-tails of VH. Yet when DLR does it, it's a commercial decision. But, if that's the case, a lot of you guys seem to be against commercialism since you dog Sam for his extra-curricular activities (i.e. his tequila). I don't get it. Is it just that whatever DLR does is great and whatever Sam does is bullshit? Must be 'cause you guys sure have blinders on when it comes to DLR.

And please, spare me the 'founding fathers' speech about DLR being a founding member and bla bla bla....he left the band and tanked on his own...end of story.

Sean you are fucking spot on my friend.
We do not want to stoop to other peoples levels though, but there is a lot of hypocrisy about certain subjects on this site.

You can find a copy of the camden NJ pro shot show of both Sam & Dave, on ebay. Just punch in roth 2002, or hagar 2002. Good Luck. In responce to a few of the disgruntled Sammy Lovers, I am by no means taking any shots at Sammy. I know that life with Dave is probably like living with Jim Carrey.
"Yeah, yeah you're funny, now can you shut up and knock it off for a while." BUT, there are 2 different personality types at work. One sells the party, with a dash of Soul, while the other sells porno, with a dash of Vegas. It just depends on what item on the menu looks more appetizing to you. Will it be the Spicy Mexican Platter & Tequila, or the Chili Dog, Cheese fries, and Shake? I like 'em both.

Dave is always going to be known as the frontman for VH. He had some great solo stuff as well. The reason is valid why he would want to capitalize on his better known material as that is the stuff younger people hear on the radio and in video. The tour was great, I enjoyed it as did many others. Sam's career was well represented by his collection of material from Montrose to today(I love Montrose). However, if you put Dave VH against Sam VH, it's like guns vs. butter. It's just more energetic. It's the reason, at the time, most of us got into VH. When you're younger, you tend to want to ROCK. Sam's VH was more pop flavored, w/ballads and so forth which classic VH didn't do. It stands to reason that Dave would want to win over younger people by ROCKING to the songs they are familiar with. When Dave played the Bumbershoot Festival for example, the other bands on the bill were much younger and artsy. Dave won that whole crowd over and was considered one of the if not THE highlight of the show. Dave would most probably be better off IMO, if he stuck w/a format of double and triple billing w/young up and comers. This, of course if he decides to do anymore solo bills after the Classic VH reunion. Sam's got a great thing going as well w/the whole Cabo thing. He really should go for it and make it an all encompassing experience for the concert goer ala Jimmy Buffet. This whole thing went off course, but thats just my take on things. Thank you.

Which three songs would you rather hear?

    A) Yankee Rose, Just Like Paradise, and Just a Gigalo/Ain't Got Nobody?

    OR

    B) Unchained, Mean Street, and Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love?

The mullet-wearing nostalgia fan probably doesn't even remember the songs listed in A (well, save Yankee Rose, since it's the only solo song Dave always plays).

I'd rather Sam play exclusive Van Hagar, but he'd better get a better band to play it. I was unhappy with the bastardized versions of Poundcake, 5150, Dreams, Cabo Wabo and Finish What Ya Started.

Dave's in a rut, pure and simple. Maybe he doesn't believe in himself, maybe he's got no one in his organization that believes in him. I don't know.

Someone needs to look him in the eye and say, "you're an artist, make some fucking art". The first time I saw virtually all of those BBQ clips I was stunned. Embarressing shit is what I thought it all was. But that's art. Dave should have found a way to commercially release it. I'd rather have that stuff for an hour and a half viewing than have Dave trot out another VH tour.

If it's where Dave is at creatively, it doesn't matter how good I think it is. It's Dave's job to put it out, it's mine to give it enough of a chance to see if I can get past the rust and see the body of work below.

Dave's always talking about how he's in the studio working on material. Where is it? This is a guy who shined creatively when they'd go in and record a whole album in two weeks. A guy who feels VH got too slick after he left. Took no chances.

    What happened to that guy??

Dave's on the road to nowhere with the VH show. It's amazing material, it always will be, but he's on the road to oblivion. Dave, I'm begging you, take one of those right turns. It may seem to be a rougher ride, but it'll be way more interesting!!

There's a lot of things pushing DLR towards the setlist he's been performing since 1999. Dave gave up on big rock after ALAE failed, and that was confirmed for him in DLR Band's disappointment. The only viable rock and roll that Dave's put out in the past decade plus was the BOV1 tracks. His solo career is dead and buried. Dave seems somewhat content with that.

There's more money to be had when playing to larger crowds. Old Van Halen still draws people. Dave's newest solo material wouldn't. Can you imagine the irony of Dave singing LAATPHT in a bar with 150 people in it?

Dave's got a deeper pool of musicians to hire when he's fronting a tribute band. There's enough guys out there that can mimic Eddie's playing that Dave doesn't have to keep any individual around for very long. That plays to one of Dave's weaknesses, which is not being about to maintain a stable band. It's easy to replace people when you're playing music they grew up on.

It's not as much work for Dave. He knows these songs inside and out. He knows which lines to forget, and which ones to change. There's no need to warm up the crowd, or come up with any new schtick. When people go to see a tribute band, they have expectations. Dave knows how to meet them.

I'm bitterly disappointed with DLR for taking the easy road. He's one of rock's most vibrant and creative personalities, and is squandering his true talents. I'd rather see him try to keep making rock and roll than watch him mimic his past successes year in and year out. For the casual VH/DLR fan these shows are great. For the rest of us they're old hat.

Basically its rather simple, clasic VH is what the fans wanted to hear. Secondly, Dave actually had a band that did this material in style. As far a sammy is concerned on the sam and dave tour...sammy minus michael anthony = house band!
