Default Jedi McFly's 5150 Build Thread

Almost 17 years ago I got the bug to build a 5150. I was only about 15 at the time, so cash was tight and I opted for a Peavey Wolfgang instead. But I did make some stripe size templates, posted them here, and now I see them all over the internet. Well folks, it's finally time for me to put them to use. It's 5150 time.

(Oh, and It's a good thing I waited all that time before I used those templates. One stripe on the front was the wrong size and the back was totally off. )

I'm going for a 1986-ish target range in terms of wear and relic, possibly late '85 to early '86. I'm using a similar recipe to my Frankenstrat build - Locke body, Musikraft neck, and a Pariah Pasadena Black pickup. An extremely generous Linker hooked me up with a Locke 5150 body a little while ago, which was really the start of this project. But I've since gotten confirmation that the 5150 was indeed Swamp Ash, and Chris Locke refined/updated his 5150 body recently. So I traded up to the new and improved body with the correct wood. The spirit of the original lives on here though.

My Frankenstrat is Northern Ash, and thus heavy as a brick. This one is Swamp Ash and is light as a feather. Look at that straight grain too! Almost looks like a one piece body.

I hit the body with three applications of Stewmac grain filler and two coats of Minwax sanding sealer. That wasn't enough to fill the grain, and I had to sandback a few white coats to get the grain where I wanted it. I ended up sanding back two full cans of Duplicolor Wimbledon White, spot sanding a third, and then giving it a full fourth can as a final coat. I wanted to go heavy on the white as I had difficulties when I relic'd my Frankenstrat where I'd go down to the bare wood in some places. Hopefully the thicker white coat will help avoid that.

While I waited a few days to make sure the white coats dried completely I worked on a few other items. First up: upgrading the Floyd to a big brass block and brass tuners.

Next: I used the best images I had of the headstock to print some wear directly onto my headstock logo stickers.

    Continued in the next post...

I printed a 1:1 scale photo of the guitar and "ghetto laminated" it with packing tape.

Then I cut it out to use as a guide.

I also got my Pariah Pasadena Black in the mail. Massaged the weathering just a tiny bit to try and match one of my reference pics. Sean at Pariah said I could've sent him a photo and he would've done it for me. D'oh!

And finally it came time to stripe. I used the cutout guide to figure out where to place the stripe end points and then lightly place each piece of tape. From there I would either use a before/after app on my phone to overlay a pic of the 5150 onto my camera roll to check placement or I'd measure the shapes criss-crossing stripes would create.

Next up: Masking just a bit of the weathering, printing the back guide and then striping the back. Then we're ready for Chevy Orange-Red.

The guy who built the guitar said it was Poplar, so I'm curious myself...

Sheís red/orange! Hopefully I can spray black on Monday and then start the relic process.

I ordered the neck in April, but due to COVID everything is backed up (understandably so). So Iíll have plenty of time to work on the body relic while waiting for the neck.

    Looks phenomenal.

Iím with Fudd though. That straight wood grain.

    Deserves a PRS like finish.
