Ed was stringing along everyone, it seems. Sass Jordan probably was never told no.
Sass Jordon told them they were crazy and that no one would accept a female vocalist. She absolutely turned them down.

I don't think it ever got to the point of offer with Sass. Long time ago, but I kinda remember that she said they started talking about it, and she headed them off at the pass. Never got serious.

That said, given the shit-show that did happen, I would have dug that version. Yeah, yeah, she might be right about VH with a female singer, but the music would have kicked some ass.

Anyway, according to Sam, Ray Daniels was undermining him to the bros before they split. He said that Ray convinced them that Leffler was doing deals to benefit Sam at the expense of the brothers, which fired up the mistrust between them.

Frankly, I find that pretty plausible - it's not uncommon for the new guy coming into ANY significant position in a business to prop themselves up by throwing the old guy under the bus. And as it turns out, that may ultimately be the thing that did the most lasting damage - the lack of trust around $$.

    Cool

I met Sass Jordan a few years ago. I regret not asking her about when she jammed with Van Halen.

It would have been interesting if she was the singer for VH. I like her voice & most of her albums.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but Sass briefly talks about Van Halen here in an early 2020 interview.

She was with Eddie and Alex for three months. I never knew it was that extensive. She also mentions Ray Danniels and about them being "on the wagon".

    At the 1:03 mark.

I feel that what was always clear with the Ray situation, was that he should have known better regarding the Greatest Hits record. Did he push for it as Sam says, we don't know. Was he pushing for ways to cut a deal for money from the Sam records, we don't know. Was he siding with Eddie on everything and never siding with Sam, we don't know. What we do know is he happily went along with moving forward with a Hits record that created shit storm within the band. That, and the fact he made no attempt to sit the band down or appease Sam, is at best woeful mismanagement and, at worst, as Sam said, Ray manipulating and money grabbing.

All good, but doesn't prove he wanted to get rid of Sam. And if we go with the Rush analogy, he was used to a band where no one ever leaves. Rush's style of music totally changed at one point, but there was no change of personnel. So maybe RD was just used to discussions/negotiations where the risk of a line-up change is absent.

No problem. That shocked me as well. They clearly were serious about her in the band. It does kinda make sense why she wouldn't be interested in singing Hot For Teacher, etc.

These guys were really turning into major fuck-ups in the mid 90s. Getting Sass Jordan up there for a 3 month audition, and have her buy booze for them, and then realize they dont want a female singer?! Wtf?!

All of this is interesting to me, from a historical perspective. Maybe I haven’t followed the breakup in 1996 close enough, but the timeline is tough for me to figure out.

If she was with them for 3 months, after Sammy was out, the timeline is a little weird. Sam got fired on Father’s Day (officially according to him) which would have been in June. At that time, Ed told Sam he was working with Dave. In late August, they had Mitch Malloy “in the band”. Sept 4th they appear with Dave on MTV. Dave seems to believe Gary was already hired as the singer around that same time. I believe Gary has confirmed he had met with and was in the process of writing with VH at that time?

So when was Sass Jordan spending 3 months with Van Halen? I’m assuming it’s probably before June? Weren’t they recording, at least off and on with Hagar in the spring of 1996? When did the recording with Dave happen? After June? Before June? And when was Sass hanging out with them? Feels like they had their irons in several fires, if not all at once, at least all very close together with almost certainly some overlap between all of them.

One other curious note, at least to me. Sass says she was hanging out with Alex and Ed, but that the only other person around was a tech. No Mike? I wonder how many of these singers Mike knew about? Seems like Mitch for sure, assuming that the “band meeting” he quotes Ed as saying happened right before he told Mitch he was in. Seems silly Ed would claim a band meeting if it was only Ed and Al.
    SOME VH LINKS CLASSICS

"Sammy is fat, Dave is bald, Mike is next in line to be the Pope, Eddie is a drunk, Wolfie is fat, Gary is gay, CVH is VH, Mike is VH, Sammy can outsing Dave on a tequilla hangover, Eddie is a meth head, How Many Say I is the worst VH song ever, Up for Breakfast is a close second, Dave was horrible at radio and everybody hates the assless chaps.
Ok I think that covers everything." Ziggysmalls

"I sense that some of our newer passengers may be nervous due to the sudden turbulence. Please be seated, this is simply a normal part of the periodic ride.
I didn't say we'll get to the destination, but until Alex comes out a says what a complete waste of carbon DLR is, we're still climbing, so strap yourselves in.
Those of you who have been on this ride before, the hottie in the mini will be around shortly with your drinks......." Red

As someone mentioned, it could be a possibly that they were stringing along 2 or 3 different singers at the same time more or less to hedge their bets.
