One thing I have found interesting is how Eddie will say in interviews that he's a better singer than Mike because he has more soul. While Eddie may have more soul to his voice (would make sense since he's such a soulful guitar player), that isn't always what is needed for a background vocal. Sometimes a person(s) doing a background vocal just needs to be able to consistently hit a note with perfect pitch and clarity. Sometimes soul is not needed for that but just the ability to just flat out hit the note. I think of it like a horn section. Saxophones, trumpets and trombones can certainly be played to have soul and emotion to them, but when they are used in a chart where everyone blends in, they need to hit a straight up note.

This is something that Mike obviously does EXTREMELY well. He was clearly blessed with good pitch, a great vocal range and a voice quality that cuts through. I think Mikes personality plays into things too. For the most part Mike typically plays on bass what is needed for those songs. IMO it's his personality that makes him so much fun to watch. I saw the Sam and Dave tour back to back nights in 2002 and the first night Mike was not there. Both shows were great but the energy level and overall vibe of the second night just changed dramatically with the addition of Mike.

Ed's my favorite rock musician, but he is also full of shit a lot of the time.

I've just accepted it. He says stupid shit, I simply believe the man doesn't have a filter and just says the first thing that pops into his head, that he doesn't consider what he says before he says it.

Just my opinion, could be way off, but I think he knows he didn't teach Mike how to play bass for example, he showed Mike what he wanted him to play in certain sections of certain songs that he wrote...big difference, but not what he said.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

I think it's the crossroads of his insecurities and, as you so accurately described it, the VH bros scorched earth mentality. So under no circumstances would either of them ever say anything that could give credit to anybody that's not firmly in the VH camp. And thus the ludicrous statements (like teaching Mike to play parts) are born.

All I know is this...Dave, Mike and Ed all brought something different to their harmonies, and it often resulted in magic like this:

Why do old men wake so early? Is it to have one longer day?

While you can kind of say the best songs, it would have been so cool to hear them develop that chorus and see their reaction when they nailed it

I think it all comes down to Ed's insecurities and the fact that I think he truly believes everyone not named Alex Van Halen did nothing but take advantage of his talents and got rich off of them. Ted Templeman, Donn Landee, Dave, Sam and especially Mike.

Sometimes even Al is not immune to that paranoia.

If that's the case, which I think it very well could be, it's incredibly sad. Shame Leffler didn't stick around longer to straighten those knuckleheads out.

Without any of those guys, Ed and Al don't have half the success they had. Maybe even more than half.

I firmly believe that theyíd be together had Leffler lived. At least after 1995.

Why would these people hate Sam?
