Yeah, it's like the worst decision making in a band, i've ever seen.

You open high energy, you never begin with a semi ballad or mid paced pop thing.

And you save one of your best for the encore, usually a fast one, or even a beloved,
epic kinda thing, with a big, dramatic ending.

The set lists, and flow of the songs, pretty much were mediocre during the Hagar era.

I was about ten feet from the stage when they rolled that damn thing out.

    I knew what was coming.

Strangest venue I've ever seen a concert at.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Their set list choices by and large during the entire Hagar era were head scratchers.

Especially if you became a VH fan from the beginning. I wonder what the younger fans think who discovered them post Dave. As Ted says in his book, they came out like they were shot out of a cannon even with a sparse audience. An arena band playing a club. Love that description.

    Agreed!

And this song, When is Love, it's just a regular one, IMHO.

The solo and EVH scratching his hair on the video shoot are the best stuff there. Not even AVH could save it.

As for EVH's background vocals, it seemed ok to me. He stay in tune, so that's fine.

Edís backing vocals are a necessary part to the sound of the band, but his parts and sound arenít overly unique to Eddie Van Halen and only Eddie Van Halen. There are many that could sub in, and few would notice.

Mike on the other hand. Not many can do what he did. Very unique.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you on this. And anybody else since we all have our own opinions, feel free to blast my opinion or whatever... I'm not going to argue back and forth for the rest of the evening...

Ed (to me) has a nasally/throaty timbre in his voice that is really unique (probably from smoking/drinking). He doesn't have alot of range and can't get anywhere near Mike's range, but his voice IS unique. Most trained singers wouldn't go for those weird low harmonies that Ed typically sings...

Around 1:45 you can hear it...

Ed sounds like Froggy from the "Little Rascals" if singing lead, but with Mike/Sam/Gary/Dave he just finds the right spot on backing vox.
    Peace

They did tend to drag a bit at times. It's a shame they didn't dig into the earlier catalogue more. There are so many songs from the first 6 albums Sam could have sung that would have slotted in well.

The 2 things Sam did wrong in my opinion...

    * Didn't perform enough songs from the first 6 albums.
    * Contributed to the slagging of Dave. He would have earned far more respect if he'd left the slagging to the others and acknowledged the earlier work for being great. Much like Brian did in AC/DC.
ďAnd what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever Ė that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both Ė thatís intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.Ē - David Lee Roth

I agree. But, even if they didnt want to give Dave more performance royalties by playing more CVH tunes, they should've continued playing tunes like "5150", Good Enough, Summer Nights, AFU etc and dropped the Sam solo stuff. It just seemed the band became slaves to having to perform all the hits, at the expense of some of best rockin tunes that I mentioned being dropped.

    Totally agree.

It wasn't his beef to take part in, but he did so anyway.
    It turned me off.

It's strange, because Sammy generally comes across as this chill/i love everybody,
    kinda guy.
Even on his radio show, he talks about getting dissed by Patty Smith, but still
says: It bummed me out, because she's great & i'm still a fan.

I don't really wanna hear Sam do the Dave stuff, but i think he could
have squeezed in "Top of the rock" along with "One way to rock."
