Cool interview and a great song. "When its Love" has aged well imo.

That said, Ed didn't always participate in the backing vocals. Sometimes it was just Mike.

Why Can't This Be Love, for example....when he sings the title words in the chorus, that was only ever Mike. You put anyone else there that can hit those same notes...say, Tommy Shaw.... and the difference will be glaring.

Good Enough was another. That was only Sam and Mike. That's why it sounded so go in their lockdown version. We weren't missing Ed there (at least in the vocals) because he was never there.

So yeah, it's both of them but it's mostly Mike. You could replace Ed with those "filler" vocals and it would be fine, but Mike's voice is almost as important as whoever the lead singer is, if you're looking for the song to be "right".
Good Enough has parts with just Sammy and Mike?

Watch a live version of Good Enough that wasn't touched up. Yes only Mike and Sammy sing together at about 1:20 in and 2:00. The back and forth. Yes. Then the Good Enoughs before the solo.

However.....what I consider to be the VH background vocals start at 5:30. Two guys are singing and its Mike and Eddie doing the "ooh oohs"
Then at 5:46. Then 5:56 Then 6:00 Then the repeate of "Come On"Good Good Good" to finish the song. THAT IS THE VH BACKGROUND SOUND. Not Mike singing on top of the vocalist. The two part harmony with those two and sometimes three if the lead singer is joining in. Sure Mike singing on top sounds like VH but the VH background sound is when both Eddie and Mike are singing.

As you can hear, Good Enough features far more than just Mike singing backups. The proof is here

That has a better mix than most of the album. Still way too trebly, but it's better, or maybe that late 80's mixing style just favors a pop ballad.

Lol. If Iíd known it was the very last song of the encore, Iíd have beat the traffic and hightailed it outta there before he even laid a finger to the ivories, thatís how much I detest that song. As it happened, the encore consisted of HMSI, Panama, and Jump. Whoopee. Jumpís no less a POS closer when Garyís singing it instead of Dave.

The worst part wasnít Eddieís lead vox. The worst part was listening to the pit fans boo the king. Not something Iíd ever heard before or since. I guess all of us up front knew the new record well enough to recognize what the baby grand signified lol.

I didn't get it at my show, I think they swapped in Josephina.

I agree with this in general and when Ed is missing from a chorus he sang on, it is noticeable, but to my ears at least, he is on Good Enough, at least toward the end of the song.

No. They figuratively broke out Gary's mummified Nana for the other.

Of course Ed contributes to the backing vocal sound of VH and it is noticeable without him. Especially on a song such as "Finish What Ya Started".
However, I feel both Chickenfoot and The Circle replicate that background sound better than VH IV.
It's not perfect, but it is closer in my opinion.
ďAnd what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever Ė that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both Ė thatís intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.Ē - David Lee Roth

Mike is the most noticable in any mix, it's why he can carry the sound by himself in concert with almost anyone and it sounds nearly right. Everyone would agree on that. But give me Dave, Ed, and Mike for the exact background vocal we all love.

I think VH first played HMSI first at the San Diego show on 3 Julyí98.

I remember the roadies rolling the
    piano out before the encore.

Encores are usually high energy parts of the show, but HMSI completely took the momentum out of the concert.

Kind of like having When Its Love be the encore in 2004, or Right Now as an opener at some shows in 95. That's like hitting the ground limping opening up a VH concert with RN.
