Dude can't win. We all want Sam to STFU and stop talking about EVH, and when he finally does, someone wants him to talk about EVH.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

"Fills out the sound" is about right.

    Bottom line is this:

Since 2007, Ed has been part of the backing vocals and Mike hasn't, (at least live) and they haven't sounded right.

But you can listen to anything that Sam and Mike sing together and say "There it is"....and granted, there IS a little bit missing, but not much. Mike is most of it.

If Sam sang with Wolf and Ed backing, it wouldn't sound anywhere close to what it's supposed to sound like, just like it doesn't with Dave.

If Mike ever drops by Dave's Vegas residency, we'll hear the difference.

ďAnd what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever Ė that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both Ė thatís intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.Ē - David Lee Roth

    This.

Itís why Mikeís vox are the essential fourth piece of true VH sound.

Mike’s voice is the definite key factor but the background vox sound even better with Mike and Ed.

One can also say that The Other Half, Chickenfoot, The Circle, etc don't sound like VH in regards to background vocals as well. Vic

To me something just doesn't sound right. Eddie is part of that background that is identifiable as VH Backgrounds. So is either Dave or Sam singing. Maybe even Alex. Sure Mike is heard more in the mix but so is Ed's guitar. Does that mean Mike's bass playing isn't as important or identifiable? Of course not. You would have people argue for days that Mike's bass playing is what makes CVH or Van Hagar, CVH or Van Hagar

Concerning When its Love, those lovely outros feature Mike but listen to Ed underneath. He changes the harmony a bit underneath during the 2nd half of the na nas. Listen to it live. You take that away and the Mike's part while great doesn't sound the same

I'd say this is more than just "filling out the sound."

The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I wish they skipped WCTBL at every show. But, seriously, yeah both Ed and Mike singing a lead line was something they did several tours on that tune.

Don't disagree, that when it's a song that Ed originally sang on, it doesn't sound quite right if he's not there.

That said, Ed didn't always participate in the backing vocals. Sometimes it was just Mike.

Why Can't This Be Love, for example....when he sings the title words in the chorus, that was only ever Mike. You put anyone else there that can hit those same notes...say, Tommy Shaw.... and the difference will be glaring.

Good Enough was another. That was only Sam and Mike. That's why it sounded so go in their lockdown version. We weren't missing Ed there (at least in the vocals) because he was never there.

So yeah, it's both of them but it's mostly Mike. You could replace Ed with those "filler" vocals and it would be fine, but Mike's voice is almost as important as whoever the lead singer is, if you're looking for the song to be "right".

Good example of both ways in that song.

When he sings "Ain't no picture ever say it right"...that's just Sam and Mike.

But Ed sings in the main chorus, and yeah, you can hear him for sure. But if it was just Ed and no Mike, everyone would be commenting on how it didn't sound right.

But Mike and no Ed? Still sounds okay. Sam's done Cabo Wabo live with Mike and Vic, and it sounds fine, other than it being Vic on the guitar, lol

Yeah, I was watching the 78 Fresno boot last night and on ATBL it's only Mike and Dave for the most part.

But Ed is in there for all of YRGM and I think it would be noticeable if he wasn't.

I think the point is that Mike is clearly the signature part of VH backing vox but Ed's contributions there are sometimes overlooked.

Give me Sam and Mike singing together all day long. No others need apply.
"Sammy was the key. He was the guy who took us to a new, higher plateau with Van Halen." Michael Anthony

Sammy Hagar did the probable. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

"It's 1978 and you start listening to this! Goddamn, it must have been like an atomic explosion in your mind! Dantres on YouTube reacting to I'm the One.
