That is true. A warm full tone, Alex's snare is still unsurpassed. I love his snare on the 1st three albums, especially WACF, which is the pinnacle of both Ed and Al's tones, but that "drier, woody" tone that has been a great source of controversy in the drumming world and is what people really think of when they think of that unique AVH snare sound, really got its start with Fair Warning. FW is the first album Alex recorded with his 1980 Tama Rosewood snare, one of the most popular snares ever made, and the one we see him play on LWAN. HAIL is a prime example of that signature base AVH snare tone, which has had slight variations on it, but has remained relatively consistent over the years. That warm, intimate tone on DD, the rocket tight snap on 1984, the drier snare tone on 5150 and OU812 etc, they are all related.

Hear About It Later is my idea of an example of the ultimate brown sound.

Also Somebody Get Me A Doctor & Fools & Can't Get This Stuff No More.

Of course there's several but those 3 are my top examples of the perfect brown sound.

I don't think anything on ADKOT really captured the brown sound in the way I prefer to hear it. The short raunchy intro to Beats Working is the closest. Imo.

There's an idea for a new song list thread....to name & pinpoint what song exemplifies the brown sound

Fools pretty much takes the cake imo

Sonically- the fire fury & torque...( as I've read David use those words)....

I've always bounced between sound systems throughout the years....Carver/ Cerwin Vega, Wharfedale, Marantz, B&O....etc,etc....

I always test the power of the amp/reciever & speakers with VH WACF....particularly Fools...

    Like Ted Nugent would say....

Blow the balls off a Rhino at 40 paces...

I agree. The "brown sound" is most pronounced on Fair Warning, IMO. As you said, Al's snare took on a new life beginning on that album. I think it's the best definition of the signature VH brown sound between drums and guitar.

For me, the epitome of Ed's classic tone was WACF & FW, even though FW is much brighter.

But WACF is just HUGE in tone.

It sounds so organic, punchy, and the saturation is so warm. So much sustain.
It has this sinister quality, especially in EWS!

FW got a bit brighter, yet still this glorious high octane sound.

They were playing Tokyo Dome on the radio, and my God, not good.

    What is he doing?

It's this over saturated, abrasive, half cocked wah, kinda thing.

The EVH of the old days would have been horrified.

WACF and FW are my favorites when it comes to tone for two different reasons. FW has a slicker "made in the studio" massive wall of sounds. WACF is just as massive, but in a "live" raw blast of power kind of way.

My two favorite albums for Alex, for both his playing and his wide range of tones, too. Part of the brilliance of both Ed and Al is how they were always changing their tones from album to album. They never sounded the same on any two albums.

In Ed's defense, i am sure his ears are blown out from all those years of touring
    and recording.
I'm sure his frequencies are all shot, so he over compensates with his current
    settings.

And when you get to his age, you are always right, so no one would dare tell him.

Most of his problem is just too much damn gain. Every iteration of the 5150iii becomes gainier. And that much gain brings out the buzzsaw wall of sound.

If you took a Wolfgang and a 5150iii stack, dialed it into his exact settings, but then just pulled back the gain you’d have a great sound.
