    Just me I am sure.

The four originals are among the best things they have ever laid down. HEH, Secrets, LG, TFB...killer stuff.

Pretty impressive accomplishment though that they could turn around a multi-platinum album in about two weeks with little to no prep work.
    In Ted's book, he says:

    Studio 1: Better sounding, darker

Studio 2: Not as good sounding, but easier to communicate & guide the artist in.

Al’s snare is much much more nuanced on DD than 84. Listen to the synch’d harmonies between Ed and Al on Little Guitars, then listen to Drop Dead Legs.

    It’s easy.

DD sounds great, but the final ascending run in the solo of "Love walks in,"
    HAS that Diver tone.

    Just that one lick.

    And it bothers me, LOL.

I also think Mike's playing on DD might be his best stuff and it actually stands out in the mix a lot more than usual.

Ah. I was talking Ed’s guitar having that brown sound, that could be where our disconnect is. I’ll need to give DD another listen.

I’ve never equated Al’s drums with a “brown sound” but I know that’s where Ed says he got his inspiration for his amp sound from.

Personally, I think he just listened to a shit load of Billy Gibbons and Eric Clapton, and rolled his hands across all the knobs on the amp.

Actually, I know the second part is true, but who knows if the first two guys had any influence on his actual “brown” sound or if it was Al he got his sonic motivation from.

Brown sound was originally the phrase coined by the Brothers describing Al's snare tone, not having anything to do with guitar tone, but it somehow morphed into describing Ed's guitar tone in subsequent years.

Diver Down definitely has a warmer, more intimate tone to its production which fits the breezy, laid back summertime feel of the record.

By contrast, 1984 has a heavier, more harsh almost "metallic" tone to its production, but is equally fitting of the music and feel of the music on that record. And, no, I'm not saying 1984 sounds like metal, since I can just see "someone" twisting my words in that way.

I love em both in those regards, having their own tones reflecting the vibe of the music. That snare tone on WHATGTG and Little Guitars is as brown as it gets. But, man, I LOVE how Al's snare sounds like a damn rocket on tracks like I'll Wait and DDL.

It morphed into that description because that’s what Ed said.

He wanted his guitar to sound like Al’s snare.

Essentially “brown sound” was first Al’s snare tone, then Ed’s guitar tones were added to what their techs started embracing as that ‘core’ VH sound in what was boarded from Ed and Al, ultimately becoming that (ideally) perfect juxtaposition flow and symbiotic tone between the two brothers, sometimes warmer, sometimes less so.

I don’t think there’s browner sound for Ed and Al, on the whole, than VH1, Fair Warning, Diver, and Me Wise Magic.

Me Wise Magic, is a bit more processed and saturated than say anything on Diver Down or the earlier record, but I love his tone on that track.

Everything about that tune is tits.
