I may just be me, but on these last few VH albums, the tempo on most of the songs are s-l-o-w. I feel like "Come on Alex, Jam!!" but it's all like predicatable "Black-n-Blue" tempo stuff. It sometimes drives me crazy. I really like songs like "Not Enough" ect...but they need to add more Roll in their Rock in general. Does this make sense?

Every one of Van Halen Halens albums have at least one hard driven song, maybe with the exception of 3. So I have no idea where your comin' from dude.

Surely 'Ballet Or The Bullet' qualifies as a hard driven song?

Alex's playing is more structured on the more recent albums. His drumming seems to be more about keeping the beat of a song -- such as Poundcake, Seventh Seal, Don't Tell Me, Humans Being, and Without You. Those are good songs but I do wish Alex would cut loose on more songs.

I would say that "mid-tempo" is quite frequent on the last few records, but I'll give Alex some credit for mixing it up on "Balance" with alot of other types of percussion and playing the cymbals in different feels that cut across the beat.It adds another layer to the songs.

I noticed that myself but remember that some of the early VH albums had plenty of mid-tempo songs. Plus, it's not only Van Halen has this happened to. Metallica is another that plays more mid-tempo songs then they used to. Age and maturity has a musician will do that to you.

Hmmmm could it be they shifted thier addictions from stimulants to depressants??

Slowed down a bit with age...? (you guys in your 20's and 30's will understand that in a decade or two...)

Or could it be they matured as musicians...? One of the most common mistakes early/young musicians make is they play everything too fast... as you mature you tend to throttle things back and hit natural tempos...

Well, there are certainly some fast parts on the last few albums (Ballot or the Bullit, parts of One I want, the end of Feelin', Big Fat Money), but I do think they're a little more infrequent than the good old days, which is a damn shame.
