Yep, I've heard him say that. I think he said no band has had a run of their first 4 albums like VH did.

    And it's true.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Getting back to Roth as a singer, Trunk unloaded:

Trunk: “David Lee Roth was never a good singer live. It was never about that with him. Not even close. If you’re younger and you didn’t see Van Halen in the early days and you think there was EVER a time Van Halen and David Lee Roth sounded like he did on those records, you’re dreaming. He always sounded like that. He got by on the fact that he was the ringleader of the party and that he was all over the stage and a great frontman and a great looking guy and all that. He never got by on his vocals live, never.”

Jeez. It's not like Dave in the early days went out there and sounded horrible. Sure, being a great frontman he had other things besides the vocals that carried him but he still sound just fine to me.

He's not wrong. I don't think many left VH shows and went, "Damn. That lead singer's voice was phenomenal"

    Dave was never 'that' singer.

Trunk sang a much different tune before he became buddies with Mike and Sam. I remember when he was talking about how VH needed to get Roth back in the band and cut the crap. That totally changed

Trunk was referring to '78-84, but yeah if we're talking 07-08 I can't argue with you there. Dave stayed within his vocal limitations and sounded excellent on that tour for sure.

Back in the day though, based on the media what I've seen? I doubt anybody was walking out talking about Roth's voice.

But also no one ever left the show saying "Dave was terrible." I've never read any review saying that at the time. The first time I read something like this was in 86 when during interviews Ed started criticizing Dave's singing.

I left seeing them in 78 and in 79 thinking no one at the time was doing or could do what Dave was doing with his voice live. Dave himself can not do it now but in the day he did stuff that was wow. He never was a big power note guy but he had elite range and did stuff different like screaming in tune while inhaling etc... No one really has ever replicated Dave's singing back in the day live. It really was not till Diver Down tour his vocals became less focused. There is a lot of rewriting history with this band and Dave not being a great live singer is one of them.
Dave carried it along with Alex in 07 but nothing like pre 82 Dave. The vocals before then really did leave you going how the hell does he do that. Go check out the 79 boots and tell me who was doing that back then or could replicate that.

Always loved Dave's voice, back in the day.

The first time i heard "Cradle," and i was a little kid, i knew he was unique.
No one else was singing in that street/conversational style.

I remember (because i was a kid) thinking: This guy sounds tough.

Just the other day, the much despised "Dancing in the streets" came on Covid radio,
and it dawned on me: Wow, he really sings this song well. Really melodic, but still DLR.
