Except Dave said "Ted, I need you for the next record, you can't do this." Out of loyalty to Dave, Ted passed on the Aerosmith gig. But then when it came time to do what was gonna end up being Skyscraper, Dave suddenly came back to Ted and said "sorry, actually I changed my mind, I don't need you." Ted was upset, understandably. Now that's what I got from some of the Greg Renoff interviews promoting the book. I haven't read it, so I could be wrong in my understanding, don't shoot the messenger.

Default Ted Templeman thinks Sammy is the best!

I wouldn’t have enjoyed the music near as much if they changed the name of the band after Dave left. I think it would’ve been weird. It is definitely a different type of band though with Sammy. That I will agree with.

I wasn’t keen on Sammy joining either because I wasn’t much of a fan of his before. I think the thing that kept me sticking around was that it was still called Van Halen.

Sammy is a bad ass singer! I will never say he isn't. But some of us cowboys like Van Halen. He was in my second favorite band. And btw, I'm gonna say Steve Perry is the best voice out there. I actually think the people in the bidness for real call him THE VOICE. Then again, I killed a rattlesnake today. So I could be way off. LOL. Out.

Steve Perry was the voice in the 80s, nowadays his voice hasn't really held up, he has been away for so long. But actually even in the 80s, at his peak, he would've been totally out of place in VH. Similarly, Sammy would've been a bad fit to sing on "Separate Ways." So these comparisons are a bit stupid. Maybe TT meant for this type of hard rock, Sam's hard to beat.

Sort of unrelated, but didn't Steve Perry release a new album last year? Pretty much crickets as far as I know. Add that to the Huey Lewis whiff and it's no wonder Sam is doing what he's doing. Those other two guys were the voices of the 80's.

I'd say Sam IS doing it exactly right.

No denying Sam is an awesome singer. Ted is spot on there.

Not sure about his comparisons, though. I don't hear a lot of soul in Sam's voice. I think Dave's voice is more soulful than Sam's.
I guess he has a more powerful scream than Plant, but it's on the screechy end for me.

Yeah, it would've been a horrible idea to change the name of the band, despite many folks over the years claiming it would've been more apropos.

The name does matter. But it's funny isn't it. Significant band members can go out and call themselves the old band, but without key players, the masses don't exactly embrace them as once before. They do, but it's always with a graded enthusiasm. Like Axl going out as GnR without Slash. Like Dave or Sammy going out solo without Eddie. Like Journey continuing on without Perry, or Foreigner going out without Gramm, or the Crue without Vince, or Queen without Freddie, Skynyrd without Van Zandt, etc, etc.

Notable exceptions...VH without Dave to Sammy, AC/DC without Bon to Brian, Rolling Stones without Bryan Jones or Mick Taylor to Ronnie Wood, Genesis without Gabriel to Collins, Maiden without Di'Anno to Dickinson, etc....

Hagar is an incredible rock singer, that's obvious.

Mercury is by far the most overrated. Coverdale , Tempest and Tony Martin being the most underrated.

I say that not being a fan of Queen, Whitesnake, Europe or Tony's time in Sabbath.

    Freddie Mercury isn't overrated.

I can see people not liking him as an artist, but the man could sing his ass off.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

From a total package standpoint (singing talent, song writing, imagine, creativity, pageantry, etc), I agree. I put Mercury in a category that contains artists like like Elvis, Prince, and MJ. I'm not saying he's necessarily equal or superior to any of those three necessarily but in his uniqueness and impact, he's of that caliber.

    Freddie’s overrated? How so?

You might not like him but there was nobody like Freddie before him and there hasn’t been anybody who has gotten close to being like him since he passed.

And let’s not forget, there was no Jim Dandy for Freddie Mercury.

I liked 5150, and still do. (Nothing with Sammy after that)
It'd be nice if Templeman could somehow fix the sound on that, the awful mix that plagued that, if the master tapes still exist for it (presumably they do).
Maybe he could even bring the guitar up to sound powerful? I don't know.
I'd enjoy hearing a remix from Ted if he's still able to work magic like he did back in the day of CVH (I'd REALLY love to hear what Dave did demo wise or recording-wise for the album before leaving, but this would still be cool; so would isolated tracks for that; 5150 had a terrible mix)
