Which songs would you have chosen to open each of Van Halen's 12 studio albums? Here goes nothing:

    VH: On Fire
VH II: Light Up The Sky
WACF: Romeo Delight (ATCWR is a good opener)
FW: Mean Street (The best VH album opener, hands down)
    DD: Hang 'Em High
1984: Hot For Teacher (Panama would have been great, also)
    5150: Good Enough
    OU812: A.F.U. (Naturally Wired)
    FUCK: Poundcake
Balance: The Seventh Seal (Aftershock would have also worked)
VH III: Fire In The Hole (This should have been the only song on the entire album)
ADKOT: She's The Woman (Outta Space a close 2nd)
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

I think MaM is the second best album opener after MS.

Swap out HeH with LG and STW with SF and you're good to go.

For the most part, I think VH did a good job of selecting their album openers.

I: RWTD (I like your idea of On Fire, but I wouldn't change a thing, sounds like the VH spaceship landing on earth)
II: LUTS should have been the opener.
    WACF: ATCWR (good opening)
    FW: MS (perfect opening)
    DD: The Full Bug
1984: Panama...but then "1984" the song seems even more unnecessary if it's later in the album.
    5150: Good Enough (great opening)
OU812: I like MAM here. But I could also see SOI...beginning the album with "Take one."
    FUCK: Judgment Day.
    Balance: 7th Seal
    III: Without You
    ADKOT: Bullethead

Maybe they didn't open the albums with them because they knew they were going to open their shows with them and didn't want to be redundant? Then said "fuck it" with FUCK and Balance.

I'd leave 'em all the same except for Light Up The Sky on II and Hot For Teacher on 1984. Everything else is juuuuust fine.

Honestly, I'm not one to think the album opener has to be the rockingest song. So my choices aren't gonna reflect that.
A show opener, yeah. Then, I prescribe. LOL.

    I. RWTD ( The horn the bass...it's perfect)
    II. LUTS ( All day!!)
WACF. ATCWR ( I think it fits)
FW. Mean Street ( Perfect as is)
DD. WHATGTG ( I like this choice, too. Not a lot up tempo rockers, so, I would save those for later)
1984. Hot For Teacher (That woulda been perfect)
    5150. Good Enough
OU812. MAM ( Again, not a lot of up tempos).
    FUCK. Dream is Over
    Balance. Seventh Seal
III. (I don't think any are worthy)
    ADKOT. Outta Space

Actually, i like WHATGTG! opening Diver, with that cool fade in, then the bright, EVH riff.

I think Hang 'em may makes a perfect second track.

But THE biggest no brainer is HFT opening 1984.

It should have been the first single too, because it is the epitome of what VH is.
