Default What Happened Between 2012 And 2015?

In 2007, Ed Van Halen was stoked; asked by a reporter if he was going to go the gamut with VH4, he gave an enthusiastic "yes!", that seemed unusually genuine.

In 2012, the band came out with a new album, the release of which touched upon Van Halen's roots (Cafe Wha; NY's version of CA). Ed, Al, and Wolf were stoked; 2012 wasn't simply a matter of "lets get Wolf to participate on an album, so as for him to gain credibility in the music world." Yes, DLR was always more gung ho than the Brothers, yet the enthusiasm was there; the vibe wasn't "full speed ahead," although it was moving forward.

Then we have 2015; a rumor or two said that EVH didn't want to tour, and had to be convinced; there was no push to get a next studio release, in spite of EVH saying 'I know the fans want a new Van Halen record.' In some ways, Wolf went from cool and fan friendly, into a guy known for sarcasm and snarky replies.

What happened in 2.5 short years?

Please...no replies with: "Dude, for much of the band's history, they've been lethargic." This is true, but something happened behind the scenes. What was it?
"If only Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang had as much enthusiasm about Van Halen as Dave, Sammy and Mike do … " - I Coulda Hada VH

"I don't think he owes us, and I think few if any do. What we would like is for him to release music, since he is our favorite musician. It's a wish and a hope, not a critique." - Dave's Dreidel

Uh...the crowds didn’t embrace the new tracks, they realized they’d been resigned to the nostalgia circuit, and Ed and Al grew tired of working with Dave again.

“The crowds didn’t embrace the new tracks” - yet the album with those tracks was #71 on Billboard’s top albums of the year and only lost #1 album debut status to Adele, who was at her career peak had a fantastic televised performance that week. That’s impressive for a band that self imploded and was essentially dormant to the general public for 15 years.

I think three things were apparent about the 2012-2015 time period:

    1) Ed decided focusing on his health was more important (remember the diverticulitis issues of 2012)

    2) Ed lost the fire/passion for touring and recording - if it was ever back besides for Wolfgang’s benefit in the first place

    3) The VH brothers got sick of Dave again

    All of the above
Plus Dave's singing at one point is horrible. Dave catches hell for it on this very site. They couldn't go forward with Dave screeching at every show. It was just to embarrassing to let him make a circus out of VH....

Eddie also has a son who has a major say in the band. Look at his timeline of events.

Yeah, I think health issues continuing to pop up was probably the biggest factor. Actually, if memory serves, I think Darrin even said the biggest reason an album didnt get finished in 2014 was Dave, not Ed. And he has said Dave is healthier now than he has been since 2008. Maybe Darrin can confirm if I'm remembering his posts correctly.

I think the "Ed and Al got tired of DLR" line is getting a little tired. From all indications, the relationship between the three has never been better than it is right now.

DLR's tour was a Van Halen tour in many ways. VH representation, VH road crew, VH equipment. I think Ed and Al came to the conclusion that they simply don't want to do it anymore.

I am still in my 40's, and I don't want to do what I do anymore either, and I get paid very handsomely for it. Ed's an introvert, he doesn't crave the attention like DLR does, if he can tinker in his garage on gear, I think the man is happy. Throw in his ongoing health issues, and he probably said "fuck it".
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

It makes some, not all, but some who say it feel better in some strange way to say they are "tired of working with Dave."

    1) Driving force of Mach 4 is Wolf.

He has been pulled through the ringer by people who have not embraced his presence, whatever the reasoning be it valid or not, and based on how his dad and uncle take it; it doesn't surprise me he takes it the same way - I probably would as well.

    2) Ed's health. Everybody in the band, including Dave, is more concerned with having a healthy Ed than an Ed that tours sick (Ambulance tour)

    3) It sounds like 2015 was a deadline they had to fulfill and things did not go as planned initially.

    4) At MSG in 2012, Dave said "Here's another new one you won't like" or something to that effect; so even Diamond Dave began feeling similar to the VH's in terms of fan response to new material - they might be more on the same page than the public is privy to, but keep the banter the same because its what they do.

    5) I'd rather see them coalesce at their own pace than have something forced.
