They rolled that goddamn piano out at the show I was at in Del Mar and I remember thinking, "Why? You've got a catalog of 10 albums to pull from and you're going to subject us to this?"

Other than that the show was fantastic but that really threw a wet blanket on it.

I like Ed's piano playing and in a different setting I'd love to hear him just play but when I'm at a Van Halen rock show that's not what I want to hear.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Ed wasn't into creating new music with Dave. Which, eventually, was what it was gonna take to keep going.

I don't see that there was much enthusiasm to begin with to actually create anything. It took them 5 years from the reunion to release an album that for the most part didn't even need to be written, and in 2010 Eddie was pretty blunt that he didn't see much point in making an album at all and that they might not even do one. It's not hard to see them quitting if that was the "enthusiastic" starting point.

    Fixed that for you.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Yep. Edward has definitely soured on the business of making music, and did many years ago.

It's unfortunate, but on the other hand his dedication to getting his superhuman skills back was extremely impressive and has to be commended. The only other similar example I can think of is when Peart didn't play at all for years after he lost his family and then had to rebuild his playing to world class level almost from scratch. Those are the only two people I can think of that went from such a high level to letting it waste away and then had to practically start over and made it all the way back.

Yep. It's obvious that the three Halens did a LOT of woodshedding together at 5150, because they were on point as a power trio, and Ed did play better in 2015 than he had since the III tour.

With Peart, it was probably somewhat easier because I dont believe he ever had substance abuse problems or even some of the health issues Ed faced for years, but you would know more about his situation I'm sure.

I think people tend to forget about the hand surgery Ed had to have, too.

Yeah, there was an immediate difference when Eddie sobered up from the 2007 leg to the late 2008 leg, then I think he was about the same or maybe a little better for the 2012-2013 shows, and then in 2015 he was the best since 1998 easily. You could tell by 2015 that, even if he was able to play some parts as well earlier, he was doing it far more easily in 2015, it looked effortless again for the first time in decades.

I think Eddie would like to make music. The only problem is that the music he would like to make is probably not the same kind of music many of his fans want him to make.
