I've listened to the song a few times and it really doesn't do much for me. I'm in the minority with that opinion on here, so it's all good.

I really like this tune from Space Between …

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

Adding my two-cents to a few topics above...

HSAS is not overrated but undersold. CF's debut is great but nowhere near any of the Sam Halen albums. Oh Yeah is good live song, but nowhere near CF's best work. CF was great and so was Journey.

My only quibble with it is that the song really doesn't go anywhere.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

That's how I feel about Funky Feng Shui. It would have been more interesting if they had walked the riff up from E to A and then to B instead of just staying with E. My $.02. Keep the change.

I don't know man, that 1-4-5 chord progression is pretty risky, no one uses it.

I really like the song but you are right and I think it could have been much more. You need something that happens between the versus and the chorus. Him just saying "affirmation" and then echoing 2-3 syllable phrases for several bars doesn't really work for a complete song. Unfortunately with Sam as the sole song write and in his seventies to boot, this is about as good as it gets.

    I know, right?

I played along on my acoustic guitar and went from E to A7sus4 then immediately to A7 then back to E then to B7+9 and then back to E. Try it and let me know what you think. It's a lot more bluesy.

It doesn't go anywhere and there's no fire behind it. It's kinda just...there. Blah.

That's why despite all the drama the combos of DLR/EVH and SH/EVH were good for each other - whether via collaboration or escalation, both sets pushed their counterparts to be better. And that's why VHIII has a lot of great playing but a lot of tunes are duds.

Re: Chickenfoot - If you combine both albums and trim the fat you've got one really solid record. But on each release as-is there are a few too many tunes that lack the aforementioned fire from either Sammy or Joe. Probably doesn't help that I'm not the biggest fan of Joe in the first place, though I do much prefer him in the band setting than solo (and I prefer him to Vic). I really wish we would've gotten another Chickenfoot record.

But I'll take some circles songs in the vein of a fleshed out Funky Feng Shui for sure. That was a fun demo / proof of concept, just needs to be completed.

I remember watching that HSAS concert on MTV, way back in the day, and just loved the performance.
Schon just had the feel & the chops, just uber confident in that context.
And his style of guitar meshed so well with Sam's voice.
And Michael Shrieve was incredible, laying it down behind them.

I remember that concert, and Rainbow's "Straight between the eyes," was another MTV live
    performance, they broadcast.

I caught that Rainbow tour. With Iron Maiden and 38 special. Difficult To Cure before that in the same venue.

With the laser eyes moving around, hitting the audience?

I'm a huge fan of both Difficult to cure & Straight between the eyes.

My God, this tune just rips:
