Default Women And Children First - 40 Years Later

Women And Children First turned 40 yesterday. What are everybody's favorite songs and memories from, what for me, will always be the real Van Halen III?
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

My very first VH album, and i remember my mom buying it for me in Newburyport, MA, 1980.

I was allowed to choose one album, and i had heard "Cradle" on the radio at that point, and
    absolutely loved it.
I think it was my gateway for the metal head i'd become, because i had never heard anything
    like it before.

The huge guitar tones, and the way Dave sang the lyrics in this cool, conversational style...
    I thought this was IT.

By the time i was 13, this album became my Bible.
I worshipped the damn thing, even re-buying it in every format (vinyl, dual cassette, reg cassette, multiple CD's)
WACF was always my personal epitome of VH.

I listen to the album in full, i love the sequencing and every song.

I really can't pick faves, my tops are: Fools, Romeo, Loss of control, Whiskey, Cradle & IASR.
Graver, Walking Ed, refugee from CVH & proud tone chaser...

WACF is such an iconic album. Romeo Delight, Take Your Whiskey Home, and Loss of Control are my top three on a flawless album.

ATCWR is the first rock song I can remember hearing. WACF, depending upon my mood, is my favorite VH album.

I still don't like LOC, impressive song, but I don't like it.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

GOAT hard rock album. Flawless. First record where VH starts to really expand past the 3 minute radio friendly format song structure. The best album tones ever for Ed and Al.

Probably their most raw and heavy album. Musically, the tones are just as dark, if not darker, than FW because of the raw "live in the studio" feel of the album.

EWS, RD, LOC, and IASR are all in my top 5 tunes ever. Fools is easily in my top 15.

Been my favorite album since the first day my cousin brought over his cassette when I was 7 yrs old.

The only other hard rock bands off the top of my head that could pull off a tune like CTBM so perfectly are Zep and the Who.

Also my favorite cover of theirs. Green is my favorite color and the photo itself is so great. Always reminded me of the band raising the flag on Iwo Jima, but with Ed's Shark replacing the flag. And the back cover photo of the band was just as cool. They seemed larger than life.

If there ever is another tour, Tora Tora/Loss of Control should be the opener. That combination is a fucking bulldozer.

Also, Fools needs to be played live. A killer intro & a simple, yet sweet sounding main riff.

Heard Romeo Delight on the radio a couple of weeks before WACF album release (this was the old days, kids)...and immediately called the station to request it be played again. Sheesh - awhile ago.

Yes! LOC is just an incredible piece of music showing off the brilliant synchronicity between Ed and Al. They could've played speed metal better, and more "musical", than the speed metal bands of the 80s if they had chosen to do so.

Fools would be right in Dave's wheelhouse at this point and this is another tune where I could see the band doing a great extended jam on the outro.

Awesome album. Used to play it over and over in the garage while shooting hoops out in the driveway.

That poster of Dave chained to the fence, though?! Even as a 12 year old I was all, "What the heck?!"

What other band could pull off CTBM, and Happy Trails for that matter, at that time but Van Halen? I submit to you, no other band.
