I posted my old rendition partially for you to check out, when I quoted you back on page 2

Hey, i always thought it was a bar too, back until recently.

Leave it to Eddie, to make a bar dip lick, way more complicated!
    Part of his creative genius.

i guess it's because he played it on a Korina V, if i'm not mistaken.

And i totally recall reading an interview with him, where he stated what
guitar he used to play the rhythm on DDL, and my reaction was:
LIES! You use the bar in that opening riff!

    I owe Ed an apology.

Actually Jape, I never thought it was a bar.

I had just got the Luxe pedal and got enthused to figure out DDL.
Some dude on the tube was showing it with a bar, and I was no way it's a bar.
So that made me really want to learn it. I slowed the CD down and heard a bend, and a slide, and apparently Uncle Ben heard that too.

The vid I posted was like the last time I played that song, from a couple years ago, LOL!
I learned it, recorded it, then tossed it from my mind.
I think I've forgotten about 95% of everything I've ever learned, LOL!
In case I ever get a hankering to play VH again, I got some vids to go back to and relearn from.

    Thanks, Jape!! That's it!!

I learned this years ago and everything taught "whammy".
We were all in the same boat. "This whammy thing just don't sound right".

Doug Steele does a great job breaking down Van Halen songs.

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCb...ww?app=desktop

He's pretty funny too, and not boring to learn from. He mostly focuses on the first 5 albums, but he has a few others as well.

    Check him out.

I love Doug, and he was a frequent poster at CVH.com

My proudest moment was telling him how i thought the ascending hammer on lick/scale
in the unaccompanied "Fools" solo went (he was doing it a different way).

He tried it & said: You were right, it does start on the first fret, not the second, then
    ascends...

He gave me credit, then played it the new way.

Yeah, Doug is a very cool resource for VH too, very helpful knowledge he has.

But I lost a little bit of confidence in him when I looked up the spazzo guitar break in TYWH, and he said something like, 'oh, I don't know what the fuck he did, figure it out yourself, ha ha!'
    Bye bye, click. LOL!
I don't think anybody can, or ever will be able pull that one off again, not even Edward.

I've had a guitar for a while now (Epiphone Les Paul Standard), and I've always been putting it off. But lately, I've been getting into it a bit more. One extra obstacle I've had to overcome is that I'm left-handed, but playing a right-handed guitar. I've had to adapt to right-handedness on quite a few things in my life, so I'm kind of used to having to do that. Now, it seems natural to use a right-handed guitar. Also, whenever I went to a guitar shop, there was usually a massive wall of right handed guitars, and then one or two left handed ones. And those were rarely ones that I was interested in.

One of the things I'm having trouble with is rhythm. Maybe that's because I'm strumming with my less dominant hand. But I'm inching along, getting a tiny bit better each day. Along with Van Halen, I like Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin so I'd like to be able to play along with those songs too.

I don't think I'll ever achieve Eddie's level of playing, but how many pros can say they've done that?

I’ve posted the second solo to “Take Your Whiskey Home” here years ago. It’s not easy but it’s not impossible. Eddie is a human being and it is possible to play anything he played. The only really difficult thing is transcribing pieces like “Spanish Fly” that have so many missed notes, flubs and other mistakes that playing them note-for-note with all the mistakes is next to impossible. But “Take Your Whiskey Home” is relatively easy if you can play “Ice Cream Man” correctly.

The thing with Doug is that he quickly reaches a breaking point and he doesn't care to work on it anymore. He works as much as he feels like working on a piece and then he just throws his hands up and goes "or whatever he played...I don't know". Doug can physically play anything...he's WAY above my head on the shred stuff. And I think he's just more passionate about that than figuring out EXACTLY how Eddie played everything...which is obviously more my bag!
