I'm not sure our old apprentice knows about all the clusterfuckery surrounding VH4.

I'm sure you're already madly combing the archives, Mish, but here's the bullet points of VH4 from '07 to '20. You're welcome.

    * In 07, Dave and Ed announced their reunion, sans Mike, with Wolfie taking over bass duties. Hilarity ensued, including fan fave hits like possible click track piping in of assistance to the band, Mike finding out he was no longer in VH via the internet, a not yet sober Ed starting a tour and initially playing off like he did in '04 only to stop, rehab, and resume accordingly, and last but definitely not least, photoshopping Mike off the covers of VH1 and WACF, superimposing Wolfie's images on the same covers (after a week of wild online fan backlash, those digital album covers on the band's website were removed). That said, Dave was singing live like he hadn't since possibly pre-Fair Warning, he basically carried the first leg of the tour all by himself, and they played long awaited tracks like Everybody Wants Some, So This Is Love, Little Dreamer, Atomic Punk, and Little Guitars. In short, it was a mixed grab bag of VH circus peanuts.

    * In '12, they released ADKOT, which for all of us was initially a bombastic return to roots, the hardest album they'd cut to date since '84, mostly reworked demos and a few OGs, and they toured behind it, tossing in yummy live nuggets like The Full Bug, Hang Em High, and Hear About it Later, plus a fair amount of the new tunes, which had mixed reviews from the diehards and the mainstream. The album itself held up for some, less for others, many folks lamenting the production value (lots of brickwall) and demo choices. But the fans who'd been waiting for a Dave Eddie album since '84 were as you can imagine pretty pumped up about it, despite the absence of Mike Anthony. Certainly Eddie cut some epic riffage on it regardless.

    * In '13, they did a mini tour of sorts, a few dates in Japan and one in California, basically one-offs, a slight continuation of the ADKOT tour.

    * In '15, they released a live album called Tokyo Dome, taken from their previous tour. It was nearly universally derided thanks to a horrid mix and a slipshod patchwork assembly of live tunes taken from that show in '12, where Dave wasn't sounding his best and the instrumentation was muddy at best. Nonetheless, the '15 tour, while Dave wasn't as good as the previous two tours, Ed was back on his A game, and more important to the diehards hereabouts, they threw in some epic long awaited first-live-ever tunes into their sets like Drop Dead Legs, Dirty Movies, and In a Simple Rhyme, plus other long shelved live cuts like Feel Your Love Tonight and Light Up the Sky. It was then that folks figured out Wolfie does indeed lurk around here, as the deep cuts were nearly taken verbatim from polls right here at the Links.

    * Between '16 and '20, lots of rumors abounded about a original reunion, two of which panned out to be semi accurate, as Dave and Mike both corroborated that talks had been had about doing so. It appears that Ed's possible health issues became a factor in those plans (he has been rumored to be dealing with throat cancer), resulting in Dave going out on his own early this year and playing solo in Vegas as well as opening for KISS. Meanwhile Mike and Sam continue to play their end of things in Sam's band The Circle; they just cancelled their tour in South America thanks to Corona of course. Conversely, Wolfie had teased on social media a number of times about his solo album, which recently was picked up by a label and supposedly going to be released this year, though given current circumstances, that seems postponed like everything else in the world. It does currently appear that Eddie and Alex are indeed retired at long last, as Dave has said a number of times he is the face of Van Halen for the future. That said, there's current rumblings about Gary and Eddie hooking up again, so...who knows.

    There, you're all caught up.

Don't forget A Different Kind of Truth hitting Number 2 on the charts only to again be topped by a historically-selling #1 album, Eddie's back-to-phenomenal-playing on that tour as well, and Chickenfoot.

It would've been a slight bit better if the live album was put out after the '15 tour. Drop Dead Legs would be a nice addition to the track list, IMO.

I also wish House of Pain was played on that your. I think it would've sounded killer with Eddie's then current tone. II would liked to have heard the outro call and response stuff as well.

I recently got How the West Was Won, by Led Zeppelin. Page sounded great on there, and was superb at improvisation in a live setting. I think the "two years old with a broken hand" comments were unjust and a bit of a cheap shot.

In comparison (guitar technique, not songwriting), guys like Yngwie could say that Eddie live sounds like a four year old with a sprained wrist. Haha.

Although I'm no guitar connoisseur, I think that's a stretch but I'll give you a 9-year-old who hurt his ring finger a little picking his ass earlier that day. Is Yngwie Cumsteen that much more proficient technique-wise?

There are many guitar players more technical than Eddie, yet several wouldn't say that in print because it's not the status quo thing to do, and they revere him and his innovations - rightly so.

In terms of shredding/technique and coming up with endless lines on a whim? If a "head cutting" contest had Ed, Yngwie, Vai, Kotzen, Gilbert - Ed wouldn't even take home a bronze medal. IMO.

Having said that, EVH is my favourite guitarist of all time. That will never change, yet some often get 'favorite' and 'best' blurred. Again, IMO.

Yngwie has technique in spades, but he can't write a song to save his life.

IMO, Eddie was way more innovative than Yngwie. Also, songs are what ultimately matter, not how fast you can play a harmonic minor scale.

Technically, there are few as brilliant as Yngwie.

His ability to swing, or “feel” or write a killer song can be debated because that’s subjective.

I saw Yngwie at a little club in Pasadena, CA called The Rose last May. His technique and speed was superb, but it got old pretty quickly.
