I guess that isn't a true measure of creativity, but whatever album had the most songs he came up with in the period they wrote the album, where he didn't have stuff from years ago. Yes, I know he still came up with those songs, but that was over a period of years. For a true measure, I want to know the times he came up with it all just for that album.

Truthfully, I think Balance is extremely creative from a song-writing perspective. And it sounds significantly different than most of what they'd done to that point. But I'm also not a guitarist, so maybe not his most creative or innovative playing, if that makes sense.

All I know is the Balance tour was to me the pinnacle of the VH I knew, which started with the 1984 album. That was one tight, professional, powerful band.
Excluding instrumentals and obviously covers, I'd say:

VHI: 25 (23 originals from WB demo plus ATBL, JC, and AP)
VHII: 3-4 new (DTNA, LUTS, WIL, plus maybe OLA; excluded SGMAD, BU, DOA, BG)
WACF: 4 new (ACTWR, EWS, RD minus the bridge, CTBM; excluded Fools, LOC, TYWH, IASR)
FW: 7 new (DM, SS, HAIL, Unchained, PCTS, STIL, OFOTD; excluded MS)
DD: 3 new (Secrets, LG, TFB; excluded HEH)
1984: 6 new (Panama, TJ, DDL, HFT, IW, GGB because the live instrumental was the year prior so close enough to being "new"; excluded "Jump" which was written a few years prior and HOP which was close enough to the demo)
5150: 8 (WCTBL, GU, Dreams, SN, BOBW, LWI, 5150, Inside; excluded GE which was from The Wild Life in '84)
OU812: 4 (MAM, WIL, CW, SOI; excluded AFUNW and FSG because in The Wild Life, BAB because the music was played/jammed on the 5150 tour at least once, and SIA3P because the music was written in '84)
FUCK: 8 (Poundcake, JD, Spanked, Runaround, INO, MOAM, TDIO, TOTW minus the intro riff; excluded PD because was jammed in '89 on tour and RN because from The Wild Life)
BAL: 9 (CSLY, DTMWLCD minus the main riff likely inspired by their live version of "Rockin' in the Free World," Amsterdam, BFM, NE, Aftershock, TMBDV minus the intro, Feelin', excluded TSS because Ed said that was from early '70s and CO because written in early '80s)
VHIII: 8 (WY, OIW, FA, DWD minus parts from Stompin' 8H, FITH, Josephina, BOTB, HMSI; excluded Once because likely "Ether" and YTTD because likely "Between Us Two")
ADKOT: 1 (YAYB minus riff from Wild Life; excluding the obvious plus CT which was probably from '99 sessions, AI from '03 NAMM, TTWN which was probably from '90 sessions/"Hendrix Jam", SF which was mostly Dave and Wolf)

Vh1, and balance era. Imagine a whole album ala Can't get this stuff no more and Me Wise Magic. That would have been a fucking scorcher. I'd say both tail ends of the band.

There are some killer solos on A Different Kind of Truth.

An entire album of MWM-level material would be too much to handle. Just too damned good.

At the same time, if that happened it would have probably lessened the impact and/or meaning MWM has to me and other fans.

Considering it was one of only two songs, a reunited CVH lineup had put out since 84...and it just so happened to be, quite possibly, their best song ever.

    To me, it is anyways.

An album of CGTSNM and MWM material would probably still in my multi cd player.
As would a Sammy era album in the Humans Being vein, and the scrapped follow up to III.

As a Van Hagar fan first, Dave Halen second, I would have preferred a follow-up to Balance with Sammy. Having Backdoor Shuffle, Humans Being, and whatever MWM would have become with Sam would have made for a killer album.

Totally agree! Even if (and we know they were) tensions were high towards the end with Sammy, the Red Rocker was still in the band. Not to mention that many have said Eddie writes great music when there is conflict, re; much of FUCK, Balance, and Humans Being. I'd LOVE to have heard that follow up album with that lineup!!!

The two BOV1 tracks with Roth were almost apologetic, and you could tell Eddie had no intention at the time that a full album and tour with someone who wasn't in the band was in the works. Musically, two great tunes. I dig them both.

Very well might be, in my opinion.

To hear Roth back with Ed, Alex and Mike for the first time in 12 years, come back with a tune like that? Virtually a one off?

It was like the 80ís party band grew up a bit, and said, ďListen to this. Just FYI this is what we can still do...Ē.

I think you have to throw it into the conversation of greatest VH songs of all-time.

No doubt I was thrilled beyond words to have Dave back, and the songs were really good.
But as good as they were I never put them on the level of classic stuff like I'm The One, Unchained....
Band sounds great, Dave is great, production is great, but those tunes didn't hit me like a Romeo, Little Guitars, or any of the classic stuff.

    What? MWM and CGTSNM?

I might put MWM in my top 10. Itís a wicked track. Hmm. Maybe top 15. Ehh...maybe top 10. I canít decide unless I give someone their weekly dose of serotonin.

Top 5 mostly static...next 5, varies year to year give or take 1-2....

Yeah, it just barely makes it. Though some years The Full Bug or Humans Being edges it out.
