Iím sure they made sure that a girl didnít win. Itís not like we saw them pick it out of a hat or something. I doubt it was that random.

Same here. I forget how I got it (might have been through a contact at LA radio station KMET) but I sold it around the late 90's along with most of my VH tour shirt collection I acquired seeing VH from '78-'86.

I think VH would have preferred a girl winning, though.

Remember the fat chick that won the "Star in Loverboy's next video" MTV contest?

They reduced her onscreen time to like 1 second.

I remember when VH had a contest in 1988 where the winner would get to be onstage with VH and could play with them. I so wanted to win that and play a VH song with the boys on Alex's drum set. It was that big ass white donut too so I probably would have been lost on that thing!

Some girl won the stupid thing and all she did was dance. Sammy called her Gidget!

Obviously this documentary is too short to get into it all, but the whole Lost Weekend turned into a shitshow. He quickly wore out his welcome with the band. At one point MTV had to lock the guy in a room back at the hotel because he was freaking out from reacting to the drugs and booze, puking all over the place. And that was just the first night. The second night wasn't nearly as wild - for him at least - because of the hangover he was dealing with. Unfortunately, Jefferis' life went downhill when he got back to Pennsylvania, he became a hardcore drug addict but eventually got clean and ended up working as a maintenance man. He seems to have made peace with what happened now, but for a bit it was like he - not blamed - but pointed to that event as what set him spiraling.

^^^^ even if all of that is true, it says more about the failings of such a contest rather than the personal shortcomings of the winner. But those were the good 'ol MTV days - a crazy network that really did do crazy, ill advised things.

Well, it is 100% true, but other than that, yeah, it was the network's responsibility to keep things together. Totally different time. Like the friend he brought says in the mini-doc, if that were to happen today, there'd be lawyers with a 50 page release and they couldn't get away with 1/10 of what they did then.

Wait, how do you know all this? That's the first time I heard this. I've always thought of the Lost Weekend as a glorious episode in VH's career and am a bit surprised that there's a negative side to it. We already got cancer, the coronavirus and global warming, can't we keep the Lost Weekend?!?!

You're surprised that some 20 year old kid from podunk Pennsylvania would encounter problems partying with established rock stars like Van Halen?

The guy is lucky to be alive. Ed, Al, Mike, and Dave had been involved in that lifestyle for over a decade and had built up a tolerance to substances in that time frame. To bring a 20 year old kid into that environment and expect him to not have a bad reaction was irresponsible.

I blame MTV more than I blame the band.

Isn't the whole issue that he had a medical condition? Also i'm sure "everything" was available backstage, but then it's a matter of knowing your limits. I'm sure the guy got wasted but there's wasted and passed out nikki sixx style where you see the white light and come back. I'm sure VH didn't want to have a lawsuit on their hands from the dude's family. See that's one whole episode that Noel Monk must've been in charge of, more than the band itself.

I think he had hit his head or something and had an undisclosed TBI.

And yeah, ultimately it's the guy's responsibility to stay under control, bit let's get real, if he's back stage with Van Halen that's probably gonna be a little harder than being at some frat party or bar.
