Default David Lee Roth on Fair Warning lyrics

Started reading a copy of a British magazine called Planet Rock I had laying around my office. There is a David Lee Roth interview from 2004. The interviewer asks Dave if the dark lyrical content of Fair Warning had anything to do with increased tensions within the band. Dave’s answer as only Dave could put it !! “ No, it came from somewhere else. I had bought a parrot. A big red Amazonian parrot named Ricky. Man that bird was bad! You couldn’t go anywhere near that bird, much less its cage without it shrieking. It made more noise than a preacher in a strip club on a Sunday morning. At the time I was living in a small apartment in North Hollywood and I would walk past the birds cage at two meters distance and the thing would start up a holy shriek to raise the devil and his henchmen. Talk about anxiety overload! So when I sat down to write the lyrics for that album that is what I was dealing with. Everything was clenched fist and stiff upper lip.” Classic Dave !!

A parrot? I think I like the band tension narrative better!

Dave was on the verge (well, two years later) of a breakthrough with the VH brothers, so he was probably treading water with that comment.

Is it "Wearin' out my welcome, guess I better say my prayers" or "Wearin' out my welcome, guess I better save my breath?"

Lol, I think he was fucking with that reporter.

Read his autobiography, he talks about his mindset during the recording of that album.

    That's a great quote.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

    Prayers, the first one.

At least, that's how i always heard it.

Though, the second idea makes more sense in the lyrical context.

I always thought it was the later.

That's the way I sing it in my car...and that can't be wrong.

I used to think it was "I'm goin' straight to hell"
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

That is a great quote. I vaugly recall something about the parrot but just now googled trying to find the magazine if you see this post could you please post the magazine issue number & who is on the cover.

Just ran across this 2004 interview from Scotland for Music Express Magazine on the Youtube while searching " David Lee Roth Planet Rock 2004 Interview" so figured might as well post it. I havent listened to the whole clip yet but maybe it's the same interview & reprinted into a new Planet Rock magazine. Planet Rock magazine is fairly new they werent around in 2004.
