I had no idea that guy was so good doing the shred stuff!

Steve Vai actually mentioned he wasn't a proficient sweep picker, until Devin fired him up
because he had mastered the technique.

I only saw Devin live once, when he was in the Vai' “Sex and Religion” Project. Devin sang, played drums and guitar during the show. He was fantastic. That was a great show!

I had no idea who Devin was up to that point. He killed it on stage. I never followed him after that, nor do I seek out any of his stuff. But he left a huge impression on me because he seemed like such a monster musical presence on stage.

I could relate to this GW article, because that’s exactly what me and my friends did back in the 80's. We tried to figure out what Eddie was doing on the early VH records, by ear. Fun Stuff!

I remember seeing an interview with Devin awhile back where he said that the main riff from his following song was inspired by You Really Got Me …

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

In the new special Aerosmith issue of Classic Rock, the introduction states:

The greatest American rock & roll band of all time...

Some might say Creedence, The doors, or even 70's Van Halen, but....

I thought it was interesting they said 70's VH, which is VH I and II.
What about WACF or FW...or even 1984?

Regardless, the title was given to Aerosmith.

If they said 70's Van Halen, they definitely should have said 70's Aerosmith.

I don't think this needs to be a thread in Main.

Since many many guitar players were influenced by Eddie Van Halen. I will merge this with the Devin Townsend thread.
Right Now you're reading my post!

That's the point. Devin hates that kind of shit. He can play that shit all day ling, but it does nothing for him. The whole band was a kind of "fuck you" to the metal scene and the industry. He can do that shit in his sleep.

His sweeps are insane, and really exotic sounding & clean.

He's making fun of it here, but when he shreds, he makes it sound really interesting.

When Vai got him in with "Sex & Religion," for vocal stuff, he must have felt slightly nervous
when this guy showed this other skill set.

If you ever get a chance to see DT live in concert, do it.

Tyler says something strange, though, about their early tours:

He says we'd play with Sabbath, Kiss, any band out there, and our main motivation was
to blow them all off the stage....

To me, that sounds like a Ted Nugent or early VH statement.

Aerosmith is fucking loose, killer, full of swagger & bum notes...

70's Aerosmith was never the "blow them off the stage" kinda band, imo.
They were too loose for that, too fucking high.

I mean, i loved that about them...
But they never struck me as this big Alpha hard rock machine.
