If you want a cheap option that is small, I use the Vox Valvetronix VT20+.

The Vox modeling amps give you a decent selection of amps for cleans and distortion. I get everything j need out of a small practice amp with t he default settings on the flanger, choruses, and the delay/tape echo. Check out some videos on that, or I can post a video later sampling some sounds.

Yep. If they are out of production, just look at whatever Valvetronix modeling amps they make now. Vt20 was out of stock places I looked.

But they have 20 watt, 30 watt whatever options that can get loud if you just use it at home. Have power level knobs like a power scaler.

The vt20 I have is like, mid shin height. I'd estimate like 13 inches tall, a wider. The size of a fat briefcase. Each amp model also has variations, too. For example, US high gain. There is a button u can push that gives three different profile options on that setting. Like three different models of high gain amps. I don't have a manual, but u can look online and see what all the options are modeled after.

Also has a standard headphone jack.

Edit: and by cheap, I meant that I got it new a few years ago for maybe 120 or 140. Couldn't beat it for the price point and my preferences. They make larger versions that are even better.

First, I want to thank everyone for their assistance, in helping me select an amp.

I just came back from Guitar Center; Mike was extremely firm on his recommendation of the Yamaha THR; many of y'all affirmed his recommendation, and I pulled the trigger on a used unit. With the trade in credit on my low end Fender amp, the Yamaha was an out the door purchase of $159. Hard to go wrong.

Thanks again...I look forward to many years of enjoyment from this new-to-me amp.

    (EDIT: Here's what I got:

It was the best choice among my selection of amps, but I hope it's compatible with jazz and blues as well, and according to one user, it isn't)

Enjoy! You really can’t go wrong with that amp. I don’t believe I’ve ever run across anyone saying it sounds bad to them.

Nice. Can't go wrong with that deal.

Besides, in the future you can add some pedals that will get you closer to the sounds you want.

Boss Katana’s are superb bang for your buck. Probably one of the best solid state, affordable options out there.

Plus I believe you can sync it with your phone and have access to all of Boss’ stomp boxes and effects.

As a former guitar teacher, I remember my former novice students being awkward with even holding a pick or having their hands work in conjunction with each other. Not fretting (so to speak) over swapping pickups or programming sounds on their computers to transfer via USB to their modeling amps... Creating 'patches' is one thing, but if you can't finger a minor 7th chord, who cares?

    My, how times have changed!

For ease of use, especially for a 'beginner'? I would've gone Microcube all day long.
