and it's not like that song is representative of the entire body of work VH did with Sam, it was a pop song. it was meant to be a pop song. the producer asked them to write a pop song. is it a great song? I don't know but if you listen to some people on here it's like a crime against humanity...lol.

I think in general the single selection and setlist decisions were more victim of the times then than say in the 70's when it was much more album focused. Its why you see Cabo Wabo, or 5150 still asked for and in my opinion aged better but never were singles. Pre video age you have more examples of singles being more organic or accidentally like DJs flipping to the B side instead etc.... late 80s and 90's that was just not how the industry worked anymore. Some big songs were actually B sides in the 70s, total accidents

I agree with that if I'm understanding what you're saying (sorry, not feeling to great today...medicated). CSLY was def written and recorded with an agenda (hit single) and for what it was it worked in that regard. I don't think anyone on here will say it's a great VH song compared with the rest of the catalog but when you step back and look at it for what it was you get a bit of a different perspective but I get why people don't like it. I'm kind of impartial to it. I don't think it's horrible like some do, there are some cool parts to it but it's not something I really ever go out of my way to listen to

Hardcore fans will almost always feel some animosity towards the biggest hits, especially if they seem a bit contrived. This is true of VH songs like (Oh) Pretty Woman, Jump, Why Can't This Be Love, Love Walks In and especially Can't Stop Loving You.

    Jeez!

I like CSLY a lot... and refuse to kowtow to those that hate it.

I'm with you 47. I love all the pop and ballad songs that Van Halen produced over the years.

I'm a hardcore fan, but I love the softcore songs too. WCTBL, Dreams, Love Walks In, When It's Love, Feels So Good, Top of the World, CSLY, Not Enough, and Take Me Back are some of my favorite Van Halen songs.

CSLY doesn't belong on that list, and not only because of Sam. It's also because of the music that Eddie wrote. He has a near perfect batting average, but he did mess up on that song. And I'm a big fan of WCTBL, LWI, etc, etc. Being a fan doesn't mean you have to love equally every single song they wrote.

How exactly did Eddie mess up on CSLY? I know the chord progression of A, F#m, D and E is fairly cookie cutter, but I find the music to WCTBL to be far less interesting.

I prefer my VH with a little more testosterone (I'm The One, Light Up The Sky, Romeo Delight, Mean Street, Hang 'Em High, Girl Gone Bad), but, it's all good, my friend. Van Halen, after all, was essentially a hard rock/pop band.

Before we all know who gets triggered, I will add 5150, A.F.U. (Naturally Wired), Poundcake and Aftershock to my list.

    Guaranteed.

Put on any song from Balance, and women will just start dancing like maniacs, at any bar in America!

Seriously, the song sucked then, and today itís just completely irrelevant.

LOL. It's just a toss-off pop diddy. Like the rest of Sam Halen soft rock. No biggie. I don't like it, but I don't like much of the Sam Halen Lite. It's funny, Dreams gets a shit ton of love around here from the same guys who deride CSLY, but to me, they're just branches of the same tree. Especially 30 years later. There's basically 2-3 hard tracks on each Sam Halen record, and those are the ones that truly stand the test of time in terms of bombastic powerhouse VH. Everything else, is a hodgepodge of 80s and 90s pop schmaltz.
