I definitely preferred Ed playing guitar and having the keys sequenced, a la the way the Who did. And I think there was even one tour where they had a keyboardist offstage playing live anyway.

WCTBL sounds the same, only with even less interesting music but better vocals and just slightly less lame lyrics, "only time will tell if we stand the test of time" not withstanding.

"Love Walks In," on the other hand," has a great live version on LWAN, with a very good guitar solo from Sam.
I liked the version of Love Walks In from the RHRN discs. Studio touch ups or not, Eddie played two great solos, and I liked his guitar work throughout the verses etc.

I'd rather they play it live, with Sam on guitar and Ed on keys.

Hell, put Mike on keys and let Sam play bass, something. If Rush can fucking figure it out as a three piece, VH surely should have been able to.

No thanks. I'd rather they didnt play LWI.

And Ed did play the intro to WIL then switched to guitar and that was fine IIRC.

And there's no way Sam could play the solos to Dreams with any justice IMO.

Besides, the guitar interplay you were talking about was probably One Way To Rock, which has no keys anyway.

And in 1984, Ed playing only keys on Jump sucked, including doing the guitar solo on the keys. Blaggh. Lol, yeah I know most people hate Jump regardless, but I do like it, especially when Ed is playing the cool guitar parts and great solo in that tune.

That was so fuckin' stupid. Ed was never gonna be anybody's backup guitarist lol. There's a reason that every single fuckin' arena I entered for VH, since 1981 at the Forum anyway, always had the masses not chanting "Dave Dave Dave" or "Sammy Sammy Sammy." Nope. It was ALWAYS "Eddie Eddie Eddie." 20 thousand peeps at the top of their lungs cheering for...not the singer, not the band...but for the ever lovin' insecure Dutch-Indo guitarist.

It's much much better without sequenced assist. Why fucking play live at all, if you can't play the songs with the members at hand? No Fitz underneath the stage, no piped in bullshit. Just have band members multi-task. On the few synth tracks that need to be played, have Sam - or Dave - play the guitar for Jump or Dreams, have Eddie play the keys for those FEW songs that must require synth...or better yet, strip down the fucker to a guitar driven version without keys AT ALL. Didn't Mike play an onstage synth for Cradle on the Invasion tour? Same shit. Play the songs with the members at hand, in whatever fashion you need to, to ensure it's ALL live. Strip it down, play it raw, switch off instruments, have the lead singer lend a hand with hardware.

    This.

It ain't fucking rocket science, especially for Van Halen. I know some detractors don't want to give credit to certain people in the band, but ALL of them are monster musicians.

The guitar driven version of I'll Wait they play is ( . Y . ), they could have done the same with WCTBL and it would have been fucking great...guaranteed.
