There is simply not a bad song on 1984.

between top jimmy and drop dead legs for me. tough choice but TJ edges it with mega catchy riffs, unique intro and crazy abstract solo. DDL has possibly a better main riff (almost as much swagger as Back In Black) but the solo-to-fade tactic bugs me slightly. it doesn't sound like a 'real' solo to me.8

GGB has great ideas but sounds like 15 random sections of different tracks stuck together, and HOP while great is not as good as the original demo version (imo)

I will go with Top Jimmy. I have always loved this tune.

I wish we had the opportunity to hear it live.

At least DDL made the set in 2015.

"Drop Dead Legs." Aside from "1984" I love them all, but that outro to DDL is one of the greatest things Eddie has ever played.

Always liked GGB. It always hit me, even now, like it was a one take. Obviously was not. But still hits me that way. Like the way it starts. Like they are already playing and they hit the record button...and rolling! Love that song on this end. Out.

That's how it feels to me, as well.

My dick get's hard when he hits that solo, and is so into it, that he just squeezes out
that wide stretch pattern, where it sounds like he might mess it up.

He doesn't, but you can hear that CVH "i might just fly off the rails, fall down the stairs"
    vibe.

It's on Romeo Delight, as another example.

And i love how you hear him turn down his guitar's volume a bit, for those moody
    chords, post solo.

The entire song just feels like they banged it out in the room, right there.
It has this very moody, exciting feel to it.

I remember when i got to that track, second to last, and i thought:
    This is the anti-Jump.
This is so fucking brilliant, and its tucked away in the back of the album.

I voted for Drop Dead Legs. I love that song.

that said, I listen to GGB and HOP all the time. I totally love the solo in HOP, it's probably in my top 5 EVH solo's (I go by what I like not if it's technically proficient or anything like that)

House Of Pain was an earlier track, but what about the rest? Did they reflect the band's mood in 1984, or was it much earlier material?

It's also one of their shorter albums; does anyone know about any outtakes from 1984?

Between those four songs, Drop Dead Legs and GGB by a large margin. If you open it up and include Sam Era, I’d add 5150. Dave era is far superior but there are some really good non-single Sam songs. I know it’s blasphemy here, but Amsterdam is a killer song. So what there’s a couple questionable lyrics. 97% of thAt song kicks ass...

My bad, didn’t see it was non-singles rom 1984 only. Ignore...

Drop Dead Legs for me. Everything there is top! The intro, the main guitar riff, the lyrics, the voice, backing vocals, the drums, the guitar solos.

Like MasterP mentioned, that outro is beyond awesomeness. During the fade out, I used to turn the volume on and on just to listen to ALL the stuff EVH was doing.
The outro has also Alex Van Halen recording some overdubs - he hits both hi-hats and ride cymbals and that is soooooooooooo good that I had to copy that in a tune I recorded years ago, hehehe! Damn!!!! The whole rhythm guitar parts are simply beautiful. It's like perfection itself!!!

Then I'd go with Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain!!

1984 is so interesting in the sense that it's clearly the bridge to mach II, more commercially driven.

Yet, solo wise, Ed is at his most creative & fusiony (both FW & 1984).

Even something as radio geared as I'll Wait, features this wild, off the wall solo.

That album was a tale of two Ed's, with the Guitar Hero battling the more sophisticated songwriter.

In a way, the Guitar Hero/the mad scientist we knew, went home after that album.

Lol, I always liked that Alex had the hats and ride cymbal going at the same time too.
