It's actually a pretty interesting and telling story. The whole Balance album makes a lot more sense after reading that article.

I like the song but Sam's super power screeching makes it tough to listen to nowadays.

The ranking of the studio records after the article was telling as well. ADKOT ahead of FUCK.

Sam strained on too much of Balance.

I love the song and Balance. There is tension and darkness on the record, but there's fun stuff too.

I really like Amsterdam and Aftershock. Those are definitely the two "A" tracks on Balance.

Seventh Seal and Feelin for me.

Feelin has, in my opinion, the best solo Ed ever laid down on a song on an album.

Meh, that whole article is just rehashed content from Sam's book and old Ed interviews.

    Nothing new at all.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I’ve never understood the notion of Fair Warning being “dark”. It’s great, classic VH. Great swagger, riffs, grooves. But I don’t find anything particularly “dark” on it.

I have never liked the song. Granted during the time of release I was more into grunge, alternative rock but I always took on it as VH trying to play down to the level of musicianship in those types of bands. It never seemed like VH to me. Its grown a little bit but pales in comparison to Aftershock, 7th and others.

I am assuming based on the interview that Sammy probably did the vocals for Big Fat Money with Bruce in Vancouver. Due to the tensions in the band, I can't see Eddie allowing that one to slip through his drunken haze.

I always thought Don't Tell Me had kind of an Alice in Chains "Man in a Box" vibe to it. Figured it was a result of Ed hanging with Jerry Cantrell back then.

Feelin definitely is an all time great solo from Ed, easily the very best of the Sam era. Unfortunately, I can't stand Sam's cliched attempts at being "deep" and his painful wailing during the entire outro makes the last couple minutes of the song unlistenable for me. I also still feel like Alex could've done more on that tune. But, damn, that whole pre-solo breakdown with that awesome riff, then Al comes in with the tight double kick/snare fill, then Alex locks in with basically the same beat he does during the HOP solo and Mike is locked in, and that solo just BLAZES.

The lyrics to Mean Street are kind of dark.

I think the album cover kind of lends people to get that vibe. But there's nothing dark about Unchained or So This is Love?
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

It's more the subject matter involved on tunes like MS, "Dirty Movies", Sinners, HAIL, OFOTD, and the dark, heavy tones such as Sunday etc. Of course, it's all done with the swagger, flair, and stellar musicianship of CVH.
