    Thumbs up Fair Warning- Rewind

    Fair Warning -
Where to begin.... This is a MONSTER & it will always be in viewed by VH fans as "the" album you MUST hear.
Weird analogy, but, i view WACF & FW as a double album.... the darker trend on these 2 albums is very clear & epic.
Think Godfather 1 & 2.... Just one GREAT movie in my eyes.

    So, here we go...
    1) Mean Street - Guitar tapping intro from that continues Edwards genius & ability to rewrite the book on all things guitar. In Lieu of Eruption, i'd never heard anything like this
Then, the actual song riff is another super cool Ed moment.... the main riff is so bad ass.... boogie , blues - brown sound ... guitar heaven.
Roth is at his best in this time period... Vocally, Lyrically.... F'ning' A baby, this is the goods that CVH peeps are referring to when they recall the "Good ol' Days... 100% amazing.

    2) Dirty Movies - Ed, Al, Mikey, mellow intro.... is that a slide guitar in there?
Roth jumps in and their off.... Filthy - Nasty stripper tune... the dark side of Hollywood, i guess..
Dark rock & it's amazing.... "Hey, you remember when that girl was prom queen"

    3) Sinner Swing - Killer guitar riff - Roth jumps right in.... It seems that Ed can keep coming up with an endless array of amazing riffs & tasty fills
BtW, I love Mike's vocals & bass work. He was PERFECT for this band in every way. This is about the time Billy Sheehan was approached to come on board
Love Billy, but .... Mike is the right guy for VH all day long..

    4) Hear About it Later -
Another mellow intro... that builds to a mid-tempo groove... Roth couldn't miss with his lyrics & melodies on FW. Mike's background vocals are the right spice for all things VH
Mike is the secret weapon in a band of heavy hitters.... love this tune

    5) Unchained - Top 3 VH tune of all time... Opening Riff is why people want to play guitar & why people relish Eddie VH's sound like its some sort of religious experience.
VH is at the peak of their powers in this song. VH could have quit rock n roll right here & made the HOF.... This tune is that great....
"Come on Dave, gimme a break" I'll just leave it at that..... WOW!!

    6) Push Comes to Shove - Bass & Drum intro..... Roth seems depressed.... slow, moody groove... these guys can do it all.
Ed is such a tasteful player.... man, he really had that magic.. ear candy for days...
Roth works so well with Ed's creations .... well done boys, well done!

    7) So This is Love - This song is part of the Trilogy - Holy Grail of videos floating around Youtube..... Ed's sound is such a nice mix of natural distortion & revved up brown sound. I'm not sure he ever topped this LP
Let's give Ted Templeman a lot of credit for getting Dave to this level as well. Ted worked Roth hard to get those vocals & to Roth's credit, he worked his ass off. He wanted to be in VH long before he got the gig.
Love him or hate him, Dave was willing to do the work & his contribution sometimes is overshadowed by his outlandish personality. Bravo Dave, hard work does pay off. This might have been his finest hour as well.

    8) Sunday Afternoon In the Park - Menacing Synth? Eddie the mad scientist jams with Alex.... This shows that Ed is a musician first... this guy wants to explore
This LP was a pivotal time for the band. Egos are growing & Ed wants to do things his way. Roth & Templeman have another vision....
    9) Sunday Afternoon in the Park - 1:58 mins of All out rock.... Some may view this as a filler track.... I really like it & Ed's solo is off the chain (pun intended?) lol

Bottomline - Fair Warning is 5 Stars & my guess is - I'm preaching to the Choir on this VH site... It's all been said before
Thank you VH for placing this LP at our feet.... EPIC !!
    BEST - CV

Greatest album ever recorded in my opinion...

    Awesome review cav.
If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

That's a stretch, but arguably the best VH album.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

This would be true if Van Halen hadn't released albums in 1978 and 1979.

Those would be the fifth and third best hard rock albums ever.

are there any FW demos/sessions/scraps/unreleased bits floating around? I've never encountered any, but I haven't been looking for a while and I know new stuff occasionally surfaces.

I've read that Big Trouble was recorded seperately for every album up to and including DD

Unfortunately, I've yet to encounter any cool nuggets like that. To this day, as far as I know, I dont think there have even been any soundboard recordings from that epic tour leaked. IMO, the Greensboro, NC concert remains the best bootleg from that tour.

Such a damn shame there isnt more out there for both this tour and the Invasion 1980 tour.

yeah I didn't think so, shame...

random funfact. this was the first vh album not to feature any acoustic guitar.

also, except for Mean Streets/Voodoo Queen, I don't think there were any other re-used tracks (or sections of tracks) from the club days era. FW seems to be virtually all 'new' material

Some great riffs on this album including one of the greatest intros of all time with Unchained.

The first five would definitely make my top 20 VH tunes. MS is #4, HAIL #6, and Unchained is #7 in my top 10.
