Default I'm The One Cover Final Re-Do

So anyone that knows me on here or even if you don't can figure out that I'm The One is my favorite VH track of all time.

As such I'm always trying to get just the right vibe and take when I play it. I've posted a few, but I think I finally got the rhythm swing part down to where its pretty close to the recording. It's only taken almost 30 years! LOL!

Anyway here it is. The last one as I don't think I'll ever be able to play it better. Not that its perfect, but like Clint Eastwood famously said, "A man has got to know his limitations."

The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

That's pretty good man! I like some of the liberties you were taking with the solo. Did you tell your boys "ok guys, this one is sorta difficult - so you gotta stay out of the room while I'm recording" lol....

    Ha!

I actually had another one where my oldest was down there and singing the chorus. But yeah, its distracting so I waited until they were up in bath time to do this one.

Funny, the liberties I take with the solos are out of necessity because I can't finger some of Ed's stretches because of the size of my hands. So I try to play something that sounds similar. Its really been that way for me since day one, I listened to a lot of VH boots when I started out and I figured since Ed didn't play stuff the same way all the time I didn't need to either.

That was before the internet really took off and you had all these people playing note for note renditions of stuff. I think that's cool and all, but I never was that way as a player. Its part of the reason I never really stuck with the piano or some other instruments, I didn't like having to play things exactly as written or whatnot.

Thanks for the kind words man, I know I'm not the most technically gifted player but I have fun doing what I do and it means a little extra to have someone who is out gigging have something nice to say about my playing.

ehh I haven't really gigged since spring. Got burnt out on all the effort involved to have 5-10 people show up. I believe I'm going to start doing a set with my bass players cover band, which has gigs lined up basically through 2020 in packed bars/clubs around the shore.

His main guitar player is getting a little burnt out on the (3) 1 hour sets every weekend.
He asked me to do a little heavier set with them:
    Panama
    Rock and Roll All Nite
    25 or 6 to 4
    One Thing Leads to Another

I can't remember the rest at the moment....

But yeah, Other than ATBL, I don't think I ever actually learned a VH solo note for note. I just approximate them from hearing them 10,000x in my life. lol

Nice! Is "I'm the One" the best VH song? It could be.

Your hair went from Ed circa 1984 to Ed circa 1995.

Fantastic job! The only way it could have been better would be a couple Flying Eddies! I'm really digging that blue EBMM. What kind of amp are you using? Had a great tone in this video...well done

EDIT: Oddly enough, really enjoy the version of ITO on Tokyo Dome...must be crazy!

    Ha! Thanks!

I have a little Peavey Vypyr modeling amp. My 5150 has been banished to the garage so I had to find something that I could use in the basement when people are home and I bought this thing at Guitar Center for around 100 bucks.

Dollar for dollar it may be the best piece of gear I've bought. For the settings on it I used the "plexi" amp setting with a tube screamer for some boost and a light chorus/delay to get that tone. It's not exact but I like the way it sounds.

25 or 6 to 4 would be a fun one.

Always wanted to include that in our setlist.

We used to open with Rock and Roll All Nite. Funny thing about that one is I learned it by ear and was playing it completely wrong even though it sounded right. I saw a transcription for it after we'd been playing it for a while and was like, "wow, I'm playing it wrong. I made it much more complicated with my chord voicings." LOL, I just kept playing it the way we did it.

Heh, I'm closer in age to Ed of 1995 than Ed of 1984 so it's probably appropriate.

You played it better because you finally got a fucking haircut.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

I've been trying to learn this song using the tab in the Songster app, but I can tell it's not correct. Close, but not right. Part of it is Ed's timing and phrasing is not as precise as the tab. Anyone have an accurate tab?
